Post Micing the kick.
I would like to know how you guys like to mic the kick drum. Do you put the mic in the drum? If so, how far? Do you mic the hole in the res. head? I am playing with the way I mic my kick and was just wanting some feedback or ideas. Peace!

Internal mic and a trigger works for me.

i have one of them fancy may internal mic things where the mic clamp is right inside attached to the lug screws. it hold my D6 a little off set of center facing out toward my floor tom just a bit so it isnt facing straigh that the head. its about 2 and a half inches away from the head. gets a nice solid thump with a tad of gating on the board.

I prefer two mics on the bass. One at the back where the beater hits, and one in front close to the same position. That's because I don't have vents in the reso head on my bass. On the board, using the two mics, you get a nice thump from the back mic, and a nice resonant tone from the front. Pan the two channels left and right, and you're good. The same approach I use on snare. I mic the bottom and the top.

I just put 1 mic on the resonant head, and aim it towards the center. The head isn't ported either. This gets the really boomy sound that I prefer

while I was doing my intern a nice engineer showed me to point it more at the shell rather than the head for recording but live point it at the batter all of that is if you have a hole in your reso head

For quite some time, I didn't use the MAY EA micing. I was content to do all of the extra work of bringing an extra mic stand and trying to fit it on the always designed-by-anyone-but-a-drummer-so-it-won't-hold-a-drumkit drumriser, only to fing that I would have to put the extra short mic stand on the floor infront of the drumriser. Basically, I didn't have the money to buy the MAY mic gear.

Then I got in a dance band with a chick singer who proceeded to get plowed ever night, trip over my mic stand and tear a nice gash right through my front bass drum head (a Tama Logo head = $$$). After a couple times of this, I decided that if had spent the money on the MAY system, I might not be money ahead but, I certainly was getting closer to having spent enough money replacing the heads every week to buy a MAY micing system.

So I took the plunge! And my set up got easier, sound men began to like me and I didn't have to replace front bass drum heads as often!

So now I run my AKG pointed right at the spot of impact, right inside the drum! Ans I liked this so much, that I bought the internal mics for my toms as well! It is really convenient when you play in a different venue every night to have the drum already miked up the moment you pull them out of the case!

I use a 57 in the offset hole pointing diagonal towards the batter head.

For a cool effect while recording you can take a floor tom and face the resonant head with that of the kick. Setup a mic in between the two (preferably a condenser with a figure 8 pattern). You can tune the floor tom for more or less resonance.

I always used a AKG D112 inside the bd. Sounded great!
