I like the single paradiddle, but I also like to play the swiss triplet over and over again RLLRLL etc with my hands or feet as sixteenth note triplets.

i'm a big fan of the american six stroke roll RllrrL RllrrL (the capitals indicate accents) but also im a big fan of quads and inverted quads, which are hand foot ideas, and swiss army triplets are lovely too, but erm my favourite is american six stroke roll with the accents on the cymbals and bass drum with the cymbals too ( Gadd uses it alot)

My favorite rudiments are paraddidles.
I great paradiddle practice is 4 singles, then 3 doubles, then 3 triples, then a double again, brings you back onto your opposite hand to repeat the pattern.
I also like RLRRLL and LRLLRR, cant remember if they have a name.

The pattern RLRRLL LRLLRR is one of my fav's too. It's called a Paradiddle-diddle
Flam drags are a good workout and fun to throw in sometimes.
Do a lot of drags as well. Of course we all do double stroke and single stroke rolls. Lots of flams, Inverted flam taps and a good one that will mess with your head.
I don't think I have a favorite, they each have their own flavor, and I'm the cook.

A parididdle, and/or a double paradiddle. I lean on these when warming up.

I use it most when it comes to playing a fill or something like that

Start it with the left once and you get a totally different feel....wierd
L R R L R R L R L R R L R R L R L R R L R R L R
It's basically a Dotted Quarter type rhythm. Very cool!
It reminds me of the year we did a Pat Metheney Show in Marching Band. I had to teach first circle...here's the pattern...Its in 22/8 time sig by the way!
R L L R L R L L R L R L R L L R L L R L R L...repeated over and over...try teaching that to a bunch of high schoolers!

if you wanna "supercharge" your chops start looking into "hybrid Rudiments". you'll find these a ton with drum coprs drummers. its basically like rudiments like flamadidles on steroids. some of the easier, more common ones are chesses, chesse dogs, stutters, shirley murpheys, parra-buzzles, book reports. Here's a small article I wrote for a small music magazine in my area about the use of hybrid rudiments. Hopefully it can help anyone who is interested out.

A man after my own heart. I also enjoy ratamacues and flamamcues. Also hard to beat ostinatos and polyrythems.
Does anyone care to explain what dead paning is? I assume it is ghost notes. Adam Nausbaum is knowen for it. Also what is the name for those eastern latin rudiments that Ed Thigpen uses alot??

YAY. Someone finally mentioned hybrids. Im a rudimentalist, so I know them mostly. I would have to say my favorite rudiment(s) would be the Flam Paradiddle-Diddle, Inverted Flam Taps, Flam Fives, Paradiddle-diddle, Book Reports, Cheese, Shirly Murphy, Swiss Army Triplets, and my all-time favorite, the Triple Stroke Roll.

Very true devilspain. without the basics you you wouldnt be able to pull of the more techincal stuff. im sure we all remember when we finally got our first open roll to sound like a roll and not an angry swarm of unbalanced bees flying at us. But once you have the basics down you might as well try to absorb everything and anything you can.

According to Mel Torme in his book, Traps, the drum wonder, Buddy Rich refered to the single stroke as being the most important rudiment. That all else is built upon it. Of course we all know Buddy Rich did not limit himself to that one technique.

If you really break it down, there are only 4 rudiments. Single Stroke, Double stroke, Flam, and Buzz roll. EVERYTHING else is a combo. Exception is the triple stroke.

werd up on the hybrid rudiments. paradidle-didles RLRRLL or add flams on the first stroke to spice em up so youre rotating left and right. also accent lefts on paradidle taps aka grammas. Another good one i believe theyre called shannon murphys RLLRRRLRRLLL etc. fun as hell at very fast tempos if you got the chops kids
