Post Awesome Drummer Shoes
http://www.earth.us/shoeDetail.asp?Gender=men&cat=4&offset=0&ID=1931

Amazing shoes. Comfy as HELL!!!!! And the amazing thing is the feature of the shoe. A negative heel. The heel is lower than the sole, so the foot is on an incline. Not only is it an amazing shoe that helps posture and foot pain, it helps drumming by putting the foot at a natural position on the bass drum pedal. Now, the motion of striking the bass drum is easier and takes less effort. Amazing stuff.

I reckon what you have on your feet matters to a player as much as what you have in front of you to play. Whether you play with or without shoes or socks, it's all down to personal preference... I just wear my everyday shoe lol (heres a pic: http://www.underworldsk8.com/skateshoes/images/shoes/adio/eugene-black-pink-bg.jpg) They're medium gripped, so i can slide my foot if i want, or keep it in place if i want. Very Happy

yeah definately not goin barefooted cuz it is just impractical, socks when practicing sure..

but when it comes to real-deal work outs, i use these thin soled & walled Keds-tennis shoes from walmart, lol... they kinda resemble me of the nike era of Lars Ulrich's, but when laced up tight are real easy to get along with

I play in either socks or old school Vans, too. I've been doing it for almost 20 years and have yet to injure myself. I don't stomp on my pedals and I keep the ball of my foot in the same place on the footboard every time I play. Technique rocks.

Oh, and try dancing shoes or auto racing shoes.

It shouldn't be the shoes that make the drummer!

Same thing goes for pedals. Smile

But, a light shoe with a thin and flat sole will allow you to move your foot almost like you're playing barefoot.

I noticed a pair of shoes I have are perfect for playing. They're called Asics.....Onitsuka Tiger. They're just really thin and soft, and have really thin soles (not sure it it's because mine are old + worn down). I got mine when they were pretty trendy 3 or 4 years ago, but I grab 'em whenever I'm gonna be playing. I like playing barefoot or in socks....and these shoes are the closest I've found to that.

tennis shoes for me. or i have these kinda dressy shoes that are great. basically something that leaves the heel unrestricted and free. and something that doesnt have a really thick sole. just a little somethin to keep the foot solid and bounce.

yeah vans!! skateboarding shoes are actually excellent to play drums in becuase they have little to no tread on the sole, they are fairly thinly soled, and they are usually light weight. thus you can feel what it is you are doing, and theres not much show there to get in the way. but the best part is most vans have padded tongues so the beater doesnt come back and slap the top of your foot which on iron cobras and axis pedals can really really hurt.

as for socks...no way. i dont want to lose any toes in there.

If your hurting yourself on your pedals you have a serious techique issue. I remember someone on the forum saying they have to play in combat boots because it hurts theyre foot playing in anything else. If you EVER find yourself in that sitation do yourself a favor. take off your shoes, and play barefoot until you discover proper technique. then play in whatever your confortable with

actually when you are playing over 800 bpm at high volume and your pedals have pointy parts on the backside of the beaters by design, at some point one is going to come back and tag you. its just bound to happen, especially if you pop off the slave pedal and onto the hihat in a quick change. the spring tension will throw that beater back at your foot.

im not saying this happens regularly. but if i play in socks, some of the time i end up with a bruise on the top of my foot. it only takes one hit...and i dont like that.

thats a lot of ?!?! so ill explain it better. if you were thinking thats way to fast- remember thats not a metronome marking thats how many times my beaters hit the drum head. or if you were thinking thats way too slow- realize that i havent been playing in a metal band for all that long. maybe ill get faster. but it seems fast for me now.

You're talking about 16th notes at 200bpm, not 800bpm.

yes, that is another way to say it. but its commonly accepted to talk about the speed of single strokes in straight up bpm as if each stroke was a quarter note on the metronome. dont ask me why...it doesnt make that much sense i guess.

and yes yes, that guy is far better than i... im not saying he isnt.

Pretty much the only place that works is at WFD competitions or saying you play in 16/16 for an ego boosting "oh wow, that's hella fast dude!"

And you missed my point. He was trying to give you some good advice and because you didn't know him from Adam you discounted what he said. My point was that you might want to listen to what the man has to say. Smile

in any case, ill continue to wear shoes for my own personal comfort, and anyone else can play in socks if they so desire. Wink

*sigh*

There's no reason your beaters should ever hit your feet. His comment had nothing to do with what kind of foot glove you want to wear.

There are a lot of highly informed drummers on this site. Slow down for a second and listen to what they have to say. Smile

Post BAREFOOT!
Barefoot or socks is the way to go. Most sneakers these days have soles that are WAY too thick. If you insist on wearing shoes, maybe try some Converse Chuck Taylors. These are pretty stylish and typically have thin soles.

I generally play without shoes. Unfortunately, this makes some techniques that require playing with a slick-bottomed shoe out of my reach.

They were great. The sole is really thin, but still grippy and they look classy. They literally felt so light and flexible, almost like ballet slippers.

Not that I know what ballet slippers feel like. Laughing
