Post Any of your family members' drummers?
Just curious to see if anyone else has a musically inclined family.

Me - just started playing drums, started with playing acoustic guitar 10 years ago, singing

My younger brother - started with playing bass guitar about 7 years ago, recently started playing acoustic guitar and just got his first drum set this past week.

My youngest brother - started playing drums about 4 years ago, now is learning acoustic guitar

Dad - sings and plays harmonica

Mom - sings

Family get-togethers are usually pretty lively.

I was the first one in my family to start playing. I started on the snare drum and then moved on to the set when I was in 9th grade. I started teaching my brother how to play drums and he's been playing now but he wants to try playing bass now. I hope he sticks with that so we can jam out whenever we want. My parents aren't musical. My sister wants to play the guitar but she never listens. She looked up tabs on smoke on the water and when she played it, it didn't sound anything like it. My brother tried to show her how and she was like NO I"M PLAYING IT RIGHT, YOU GUYS ARE RETARDED!

Oh wow great question. I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation. I come from a family of 6 kids: 5 boys and a girl.

Myself and three of my brothers play drums. Two of us also play guitar and two of us play piano.

Neither of my parents, nor any other older relatives are musically inclined either, which is the weird thing. We can't figure out where the genes came from. It's like everyone got passed over until my siblings and I came along.

i like this question.

I play drums and guitar, but I took piano lessons a while back to learn to read music.

My dad can pick up an instrument and play it...that makes me jealous but he is probably my inspiriation. He is probably best at Sax.

In my immediate family, that is probably about it...my Grandfather's sister is an incredible musician, however. She has perfect pitch and plays timpanis, piano, and can recognize/name any note played.

Not yet. I'm the only member of my immediate family who plays any instrument. When I have kids though...

My then 2 year old announced to his mother that he was "Born to play drums" after pulling an old fossil snare and some sticks out of the garage and beating the tar out of it. He never has a problem finding the 1's.

My Gran was a Piano teacher, Mum was tought by her.

My Dad was apparently in a marching band when he was young although whenever I say "go on Dad, have a go on the drums" he politely declines... Razz

Other than that, I think I'm the only member of my family currently playing anything.

Mother--2 degrees, both in Music Ed and a minor in Woodwind Performance

Father--3 degrees, Ph.d. in Education, masters in composition or percussion performance, can't remember. Currently teaches percussion at Carson Newman University. Played percussion for over 35 years.

Sister--At only Seven, she's already singing improvised songs with key changes, vibrato and the like.

Brother--Like the tuba. I won't hold it against him.

I only went as far back as my great-grandfather in my research, but I'm willing to bet music has been in my family for centuries. There's no telling.

My great grandfather, also known as "Deacon" Utley, owned and operated a piano and organ shop. He was also a producer and manager of gospel music in the Southeast. He taught piano and organ. When my grandfather was born, of course he learned music too. He started out playing acordian, french horn, piano, and guitar. He also played spoons and washboard. (not real instruments, but he played them!) Both my great grandfather, and my grandfather are responsible for many gospel greats, like "Turn Your Radio On," and have played them before they were in print. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge on my great grandfather. My grandfather, however, is a completely different story. My grandfather is mostly known for his gospel group, "The Smile-A-While Quartet." He played piano, sang, and occasionally played spoons or washboard. My grandfather's musical journey started within his own family. His father, "Deacon" Utley taught him piano and music theory...a lot of music theory. In fact, my grandfather ended up teaching music theory to college students in Oklahoma at the age of 16. To make a long story short, my grandfather taught piano lessons, played in a gospel quartet, and sang in the church choir. There has been music in my family ever since I can remember.

My sister started on flute, and ended up playing all the way through high school and into college. She thought she wanted to teach music, but ended up going after an english degree instead.

My mom sings.

I play trumpet, drums, piano, and I sing. I've earned a music degree as well.

My cousin Mark, and my uncle Harry both play drums. My cousin Mindy also played flute and earned her degree in flute performance from a music conservatory. I can never remember the name of it. It's not Juliard or Berklee...I know that much.

These folks are all on my mother's side. My dad's side isn't musical what-so-ever.

Sorry for the long post, but this is my musical family. It takes a minute or two to describe us.
