I found this old picture of Dave Grohl and I was wondering if anyone knows the brand and specs of the snare drum he's using?

a ludicrous one... could be like a 12" tom with snares on it or something, that's nowhere near a stock kit... that's gotta be like a 16+" rack tom... and a bass woofer the same size as the kick itself, hihat a foot higher than his waist... classic grohl.

before nirvana he played for a D.C. hardcore band "Scream" , pretty good stuff.

i read in a interview he sits so low cause he can get more power........

Yeah that's a really old pic from his Scream days. One of the reasons Kurt considered him when he was recommended was because of the setup he played, and the playing style he used at that time. He was getting a massive sound.

It's a marching snare, and that's actually two bass drums placed one in front of the other. I think he realized the woofer idea before companies started making them. He switched to a Tama Artstar II setup when he joined Nirvana and got an advance from DGC.

It apprears to be a hodge-podge of what ever he could get his hands on or afford at the time. The bass drums appear to be 70's Slingerlands placed in front of each other, the large tom appears to be a 60's era (note the re-rings) 16" Ludwig or Leedy floor tom with a tama mount and the snare appears to be an 80's era 14" Tama Superstar tom with a snare strainer drilled. Scream was probably just scraping by as a band so he had to use what was available. As was posted earlier, he probably didn't see any real money until he joined Nirvana and even then it probably wasn't exactly lucrative (until they became huge of course).

he used that snare all throughout his nirvana too, or at least one like it. i have a lot of bootlegs from 92-94 and he has a huge snare in all of them. he beat the shit out of his drums, man.
