Why There Can Never Be A World's Best Drummer
Often times people hail a great drummer as the best in the world. Often times they are correct in their own mind, but their thought often has conflictions with other people's thoughts.
So here's the thread to end all discussion on the topic.
There cannot be a world's greatest drummer, because there is always going to be an idol that your favorite drummer hails as greater than him/herself.
That is why there is no best drummer in the world.

im the best drummer in the world. i can ALMOST play 8th notes on the hihats are 150bpms. wait, stop yourself, dont even try to comprehend, its impossible. since you're not the best drummer in the world, to fathom that would result in your brain exploding.

Is Billy making moves on Feisty Red? Smooth mover!
Good comment though, we all have different ideas of what makes a great drummer.

Well, being drummers, we get asked this question a lot. I usually just say there are a shit pile of great drummers out there in a shit pile of genres. There's no such thing as the world's best. It's not a measurable unit. WFD is one thing, but there is no scale for talent.

Not unless another Buddy Rich is born.
I was lucky enough to see him twice, sitting only about ten feet in front of the band both times. There is no doubt he was the greatest drummer alive.

Heh. Well thanks for the compliment. But there is no way I would be the best drummer in the world. Perhaps the best Looking drummer...
Gosh lately I've been feeling bashed on.
But in response to the marragie proposal;
Are the drums included?
If so... I'll think about it. heh

You can have all the drums. But I keep the 6.5x13 Titanium Dunnett Snare drum. Everything else is yours. Hello, my new future-ex-wife!! Now git in the kitchen and fix me some supper!

As long as it's brand-name. I don't like the store brand cyanide.
Speaking of cyanide, the next crown I get in my mouth it's gonna be a "cyanide tooth"....well not really....I'm gonna have the crown maker put "HcL" on the side of it. (the sign for cyanide)....spies used to have a cyanide tooth, should they need a "quick escape".

One reason I've always thought there could never be a best dummer in the world is because there are so many standards to judge drumming by and some views of what is to be viewed as a better quality than something else, are entirely incommensurable -therefore not able to be judged on a one-for-one basis. Another reason why I love playing drums!

I've argued for some time now that there is no drummer better than the other in reality. There's always going to be something one do that the other can't do. Moreover, it's not just what the drummer can do, it's how he/she does it. That said, I'd still much rather listen to Phil Rudd than Neil Peart.
Besides, comparing drummers in such a hard-headed fashion takes all the magic out of the very concept of drumming.

you can compare drummers but they will never be better at everything Ie bob bryar could kick joey joridisons ass in emo style music, but loey beats bob in double bass drum

Lets go back to the original concept of this post. You guys may say who the best drummer in the world is...but Theres no substance behind it. Not everyone agrees. So don't just post "so and so's better than him cause i said so"
Hell we already know its me. Deemed worthy by Billy Ray heh
now boys...don't get your panties twisted. it was a joke (for those on here who just can't take one)

You know, Buddy has been dead for 20 years now. I saw him right before he died and even shook his hand.
I mean, he brought the drums from out of the shadows of the back of the band and put them into households. Sure, Ringo was the catalyst for thousands of rock drummers to find themselves but BR was the guy who was the "next level of aspiration" for those of us who grew up in that era.
There really is no denying what he did for the instrument. He is responsible for the mere existence of this forum, in a sense. The fact that a bunch of random drummers are coming together and being blown away by his groundbreaking work just screams "World's greatest drummer". And he knew it!! All that coming from a guy who didn't practice, did drugs, smoked, and was a total shitheel to the people with whm he worked. Goes to show you the power of the mind....

He didn't practice, how could that be? I mean, you've gotta at least tap on stuff to work out a part or write something new. (commanding voice) ON WHAT AUTHORITY DO YOU GIVE US THESE FACTS? (normal voice) Where did you here that?

Oh I don't know about that. In quite a few art forms there are generally agreed or accepted terms by which to judge something good or not good. If there are few or no competing conceptions of what is deemed good then it is easier to reach a consensus.

Apparrently he wasn't too shy about talking down about the drums.....

Bill,
You know I love Buddy and Louie, but your passion has gone too far.
Buddy wasn't the one who got the drums "out of the shadows" so to speak. Krupa is pretty universally given that distinction. And Buddy was not an innovator. There were other cats far more "innovative" than he: Bellson, Jo Jones, Blakey and Elvin. But, Buddy's distinction is the level of prowess he brought to the playing - the crisp rolls, the blazing tempos, the sheer ferociousness of the snare/bass accents, tom runs/fills, and let's not even get into the crossovers...... But, break BR's playing into managable doses and you find paradiddles, triplets and variations of the same as the basis of his work....hardly innovative even in his day learning the tubs.
I've seen this post and have intentionally left it alone until now. Yeah, many say BR and that's a hard one to trump. But, with all the quotes about BR, there's also the one in which he said he, "hated labels of drummers: He's the best this drummer, and that person is the best that drummer." Going into 40 years of drumming, I think Buddy was wrong. Truth be known today, there are so many genres of music with all their own requirements that its nearly impossible today to peg any one cat into the hole - seems to me we end up doing a broader diservice to ALL THE DRUMMERS WE ADMIRE when we try.
I dig Bellson, Rich, Al Foster, Les De Merle, Gadd, Steve Smith, Alex Acuna, Ed Thigpen, Stan Levy, Jake Hanna...Nick Ceroli (for those of you old enough to remember) was a hell of a player. Each one has inspired me in different ways and my playing today is also a tapestry of their impact on me. Seems a shame to deny them all by trying to just pick one over another.
