 Octavarium by Dream Theater???
Any of you ever try drumming to it? I've played it on the drums maybe almost 10 times now... I've got it nailed down pretty good if you ask me... of course if you ask all the haters on youtube who are biased AGAINST me, I would suck even if I was better than Mike Portnoy... Anyways, what do you all think of the song in general, and playing it on the drums? I feel it is moving and kind of describes the life I live, and by the end I feel complete for some odd reason. Every time I play it, at the very end, where that last piano key is hit.. before the weird sounds, I just kinda bend down and just absorb all the music in. It's so... grand.... epic..... ballad-esque... I can't get over it's amazing'ness.
Thoughts???

Actually, I don't care to try Dream Theater because I don't like their music. Yeah, they're great musicians, but the music is absolute balls. Ever wonder why 97% of Dream Theater fans are active musicians?
I'd jam to some Cynic over them any day.

I am astonished. Well whatever floats your boat.... but by balls and whatever, do you just mean that it is so complicated and basically, you won't be able to understand just how amazing it is unless you are a musician?

No. I mean that it doesn't sound good to anyone except musicians. If you displace yourself from the "Oh wow, what time signature is that?" and the "Holy shit! That was a bad-ass fill!", there's really nothing there. It's kind of along the same thread that some musicians shun all popular music that's in 4/4, except in reverse. The radio music is good because it has melody and, well, it sounds good, despite the fact that it's simple. Dream Theater, on the other hand, is very complex, but it doesn't sound good at all. Try listening to some DT songs but only focusing on the guitar and singer (or whatever instrument you don't really understand that well), and blocking out Portnoy. I doubt you'll like it as much.
For example, I'm a big fan of Modest Mouse (much to my band's dismay). Yeah, the drummer's mediocre and the guitar playing is sloppy at best. But they have songwriting abilities that far surpass a lot of bands out there - I've never encountered another band that can capture atmosphere in a song at anywhere near the same level they can. In fact, on this Modest Mouse tangent, look at Johnny Mar. Can he shred? Who knows, but he's famous all the same for his songwriting abilities.

they're good instrumentalists, not good musicians.

DT's singer bugs the crap out of me. I have to really just try and ignore him. Same with Dragonforce, Iron Maiden, you get the idea.

I hardly understand guitar at all.... and yet I still love them. The singing is better studio than live, like it is for many bands. But I just love their music, it is very musical if you ask me, listen to alot of their ballads!!! But I think that some drummers just feel overwhelmed from Mike Portnoy's playing. XD

They know what their audience likes.
Doesnt always mean they are doing the most complicated music.

Yah, but I think also, when you are a person who has a very strong understanding of things, like complicated things, you learn to appreciate really complicated music and will like it alot, like me. On the other hand there are some people who would hear Dream Theater or Pink Floyd and think they're shit, because they can't understand the depth of the songs and the amount of brainpower put into making the songs.

I love Octavarium
Mostly because that song & Six Degrees are really the only 2 DT songs I can play all the way through.
Six Degrees is easier, it's less complex and there's a lot of breaks, but it's loooooooong!!

Dude, I know what you mean kinda.. (hasn't really ever listened to all of Six Degrees), but at the end of Octavarium... I feel so complete.

My DT era ended a couple of years ago but it was good while it lasted. Anywho I must say Octavarium is horrible... now that I think of it, that's where my DT era ended lol. You should try their old stuff instead - I&W, Awake, Scenes, etc.

Um... I LOVE I&W. I listen to it religiously. Was my first album by them... I can listen to that thing on repeat and fall asleep to it in long car rides when my family goes driving somewhere far.... Awake I like a bit too. Scenes From A Memory I listen to practically religiously. But the song Octavarium... I don't know... it's just too much to say it's BAD! XD Wow.

Six times in a row... mmmm, sounds delicious. ^_^
Scenes from a Memory.... man.. if I let myself just listen to that whole album, and didn't control my emotions at all, I can picture myself crying. XD It's SO sad!!!
I think with the Octavarium album as a whole... I liked mainly Root of all Evil, The Answer Lies Within(really makes me feel good about joining the Marine Corps and to not let anyone make me have second thoughts on it), Panic Attack, Sacrificed Sons, and of course, OCTAVARIUM THE EPIC SONG.
Systematic Chaos... man, that album... REALLY just explodes all throughout!!!

Yea... the whole cd goes full circle. It ends how it begins, which is cool. The solo at the end of Octavarium is well worth the 26 minutes to get to it. Nothing virtuoistic or flashy, just sets a great mood for the end of the entire cd.... goosebumps!!

I like Dream Theater, but they're not the greatest band or anything.
They're VERY talented musicians, and I try to draw a lot of inspiration from Mike Portnoy, but I'm more of a fan of music that you can feel, and not have to think "Oh fuck, how do I headbang in 5/4, 9/8, or 7/4??"
Not bashing them at all, but they're very complex, and you don't have to have an immense understanding of music to like them, or not like them. I think that was a little condescending when you said that Pheonix. They're good, great even, but not the best. I'd rather listen to Pantera, or Nevermore over DT anyday. Or if you want something uber complex, listen to some Illogicist. I'm just saying that you don't have to have a great understanding of complex time signatures, and the brainpower that goes into making music. I studied music for 6 years before picking up drums, so I'd like the think I have somewhat of a grasp on music, but I CAN'T STAND Pink Floyd. Just not my cup of tea.

Yah trust me, I know what you mean... I didn't totally like them alot till I was like at least a sophomore or junior in high school, now I just graduated in June... so it hasn't been too long... but for several years I have liked "One of these Days" the bass guitar work... wow it's freakin awesome. ^_^

Yah... I guess, but anyways, you ARE a drummer... so I will let this one pass. If you weren't a drummer... well, then that would be a different story!
