Try playing some of the new stuff. It gets pretty crazy.

I've played In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1, it is very hard. >.< Same with Dark Eternal Night and Ministry of Lost Souls. XD

My DT era ended a couple of years ago but it was good while it lasted. Anywho I must say Octavarium is horrible... now that I think of it, that's where my DT era ended lol. You should try their old stuff instead - I&W, Awake, Scenes, etc.

Um... I LOVE I&W. I listen to it religiously. Was my first album by them... I can listen to that thing on repeat and fall asleep to it in long car rides when my family goes driving somewhere far.... Awake I like a bit too. Scenes From A Memory I listen to practically religiously. But the song Octavarium... I don't know... it's just too much to say it's BAD! XD Wow.

Six times in a row... mmmm, sounds delicious. ^_^

Scenes from a Memory.... man.. if I let myself just listen to that whole album, and didn't control my emotions at all, I can picture myself crying. XD It's SO sad!!!

I think with the Octavarium album as a whole... I liked mainly Root of all Evil, The Answer Lies Within(really makes me feel good about joining the Marine Corps and to not let anyone make me have second thoughts on it), Panic Attack, Sacrificed Sons, and of course, OCTAVARIUM THE EPIC SONG.

Systematic Chaos... man, that album... REALLY just explodes all throughout!!!

this songs a marathon, well done to any one who can remember the entire song i love dream theater, their simply amazing, can any one play " six degrees of inner turbulance " yet its like 42 minutes

I love Octavarium
Mostly because that song & Six Degrees are really the only 2 DT songs I can play all the way through.
Six Degrees is easier, it's less complex and there's a lot of breaks, but it's loooooooong!!

Dude, I know what you mean kinda.. (hasn't really ever listened to all of Six Degrees), but at the end of Octavarium... I feel so complete.

Yea... the whole cd goes full circle. It ends how it begins, which is cool. The solo at the end of Octavarium is well worth the 26 minutes to get to it. Nothing virtuoistic or flashy, just sets a great mood for the end of the entire cd.... goosebumps!!

I like Dream Theater, but they're not the greatest band or anything.

They're VERY talented musicians, and I try to draw a lot of inspiration from Mike Portnoy, but I'm more of a fan of music that you can feel, and not have to think "Oh fuck, how do I headbang in 5/4, 9/8, or 7/4??"

Not bashing them at all, but they're very complex, and you don't have to have an immense understanding of music to like them, or not like them. I think that was a little condescending when you said that Pheonix. They're good, great even, but not the best. I'd rather listen to Pantera, or Nevermore over DT anyday. Or if you want something uber complex, listen to some Illogicist. I'm just saying that you don't have to have a great understanding of complex time signatures, and the brainpower that goes into making music. I studied music for 6 years before picking up drums, so I'd like the think I have somewhat of a grasp on music, but I CAN'T STAND Pink Floyd. Just not my cup of tea.

Yah trust me, I know what you mean... I didn't totally like them alot till I was like at least a sophomore or junior in high school, now I just graduated in June... so it hasn't been too long... but for several years I have liked "One of these Days" the bass guitar work... wow it's freakin awesome. ^_^
