Post Ska drumming
I notice a lot of the drummers here are either old school (jazz and such) or metal heads. Not that anything's wrong with that. It just reminds me a lot of the drummers I know in real life. Just wondering if there are any drummers here that play ska. Personally, it's my favorite kind of music to play. Just curious to see if anyone else likes ska drumming too.

Right now my primary gig is roots reggae. Not ska, but it's all the same family.

i'm a fan of ska drumming, especially like the Skatalites. i like some newer stuff too.
i played in a ska band for a while. a christian ska band...which was kind of bogus because our trumpet player was an in-closet lesbian and our vocalist was banging our guitarist and our keyboardist along with a revolving door of other musicians.

but that said, yes. i'm a ska fan.

I love some of the stuff that has spawn from the early ska and dub roots..

Op Ivy had great stuff, citizen Fish, the Specials..even the Clash blended that dub feel into a lot their stuff

and it's funny how each of those bands drummers all had very different style, ranging from punk to jazzy to very straight forward.

I can't say i like much of what came out of the 90's ska revival because it was all so poppy and bubble gum..

but none the less, generally those bands had great drummers...

lots of very fast 4 and 4 with that alternating hh...

I'm currently drumming in a ska/punk, alternative band and I love it. The drumming is so energetic and the overall style is just really catchy.

There's the "oldschool" guys and the younger guys. Then there's people like myself who don't really fit in to any of those brackets. I'm both a codger and a youngster. Dangerous for both camps, I suppose.

Whether you categorize your certain brand of drumming as Ska, Punk, Metal, Extreme, etc. it all involves swinging sticks and hitting things in a rhythmic manner.

Ska has the "skank" rhythm (pushing the upbeat out front like the hook on a sawblade). It's an urgency thing that drives the music.

So some of us may relegate our "feel" now and again to the back note of a triplet...doesn't mean we don't know what's up. I'm just as content to do that, because I know that something different always lurks around the corner!!

My only problem with Ska is that it gets old after a while
Like punk or metal
Not a lot of variance
Of course, you can point to the different flavors but it all goes back to the same style of drumming
Kinda like rockabilly/psychobilly etc...

No defense at all. Just illustrating a point.

haha. Me too. Mostly punk but once in awhile we throw some ska in there. Oh and whoever said ska drumming is kinda repetative. I disagree. The thing I love so much about ska drumming is that I can play absolutely anything (blues, jazzy hi hat tricks, fast punk, simple 4 4) and it fits well. idk. Whenever I play ska it's just jamming and improv. Just coming up w/ shit on the spot and idk. No other music gets me playing so "out there".

I am currently playing in a Ska band and LOVE it. With horns added into the mix of things and the energetic style makes playing with a band very enjoyable. Ska is a mix of many styles of music thrown together in to one style. With in one song the band I play with covers punk, funk, Rock, and disco. I have played almost every stye with a band some where down the 9 years I have been playing and Ska has brought the most joy to playing. It is very demanding as the drummer.

dunno if you'd call this ska exactly, but I used to idolize gold-finger's "hang-ups" cd. definitely some nice drumming on that album, really creative fills too.

and I love the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. again, not really ska, but awesome drumming and horns, ha.

next to afro-cuban jazz and cubop, ska is my favorite type of music. i love the first wave of ska from the fifties, like: the blues blasters, don drummond, prince buster and derrick morgan. i also like the new set of traditional ska bands out there like the toasters, let's go bowling, monkey, see spot, mobtown and hepcat. of all the types of ska, traditional is my favorite to play behind a set. it is very jazzy and allows you to make great use of hit hat work. if any of you are into traditional ska, check out my band los hooligans.

I've played in a noteable ska band over the past four years. This means I've been in long enough to hear every single nasty thing that's said about ska drummers, and we take it... it's worth it.

It truly is the jackpot of drumming, I believe. First of all, to play ska at a high level, a solid knowledge of reggae, four on the floor rock, punk, motown style rhythm and blues, and even jazz is vital. The R&B and jazz are important to know because when you play ska, you're expected to be able to play all three waves (the r&b infused first wave, new age second wave, and punk rock third wave). You're also expected to understand reggae, calypso and reggaeton.

One must keep in mind all times the sanctity of the upbeat, and be careful not to impede it's dominance. A lot of jazz players "play" ska to prove how easy it is. These are the same players we make fun of later, because they simply don't get it. The best way to say it is that jazz is about the fine details of each notes. In jazz you're a fox hunting for pray, and playing off the other instruments. In ska you're a swan, definitatley, but gracefully swimming, and letting the other musicians play off of you.

When I get some free time after I finish the next album, I'm going to do some video ska clinics, I'll post them on this site.

Take it easy.

I absoloutly love ska drumming. The 4 on the floor technique is used quit a bit in my band. We are more dance, disco -ish, rock than we are ska but I got alot of my influence from alot of old school ska records. One of my favorites was Mephiskapheles album God Bless Satan, it is so good from start to finish. If anyone is bored or has time to kill you should check out my band Cold Hands.

now this is cool Smile
ive been the heart and soul of my ska band for the past 7 years now Smile
we play 3rd wave ska, which is basically ska-punk but the ska parts always seem to be the crowd pleaser.
check out some of the songs on our myspace
we have a female singer, and she sings in Hebrew
you can also download our 1st album for free and watch videos...
www.myspace.com/beer7

as for playing ska, its as fun as it gets (and it comes from a guy that plays death and grind usually).
as for sounding ska - get a really old hi hat with a nice "chick" sound and just fly with it Smile

remember this - as drummers, we cant be motivated by only one style of music.
for example, funk and metal are much alike drummingwise, so why not put metal into funk and vice versa?
its pretty much the same with every style. mix it up! most of the things in music have already been done.
now is a great time for crazy mixes.
i always wanted to listen to a death/reggea/groove band Smile

keep skankin all u rude boys and girls, punks and skins...

No way. I found you guys on myspace a few months ago. "Waiting" is my favorite song from Maxwell. I've actually played along to it and made my own drums for it awhile back. Good band.

I'm in a band that plays a lot of ska tunes now. I like it, not much to say about it other than you need to play a tiny bit infront of the beat. Not sure if that makes much sende to you, but if you heard of on the beat, behind the beat, or on top of the beat, that will give you some direction.
