 Recording For Youtube/Myspace Etc
Hi I wanna start recording myself playing drums, But I dont know what sort f camera to use etc. I'm on a budget as I've just ugraded to a new VX6 Ltd kit & new cymbals. Right so what I'd like to know:
1) What sort of camera should I use?
2) What mics (at a budget remember)?
3) Finally what Free or cheap editing programs for audio & Video?
Kind of thing I'm aiming for, go to youtube & search Xevifoo.
Cheers Jay

Hi, I use the JVC Everio 30 Gb hard drive camera. It cost 399.00 On my 2 Youtube videos, I do not use mics. Only the camera mics and it sounds good surprisingly. I have the Adobe element 4.0 which allows you to directly link to Youtube after you have edited your video.

I just use a cheap little sony digital pic camera that has the video capability for the video.. and run my drum mics to my mixer then into my pc using Sonar,...record the audio and video at same time, dump both files onto movie maker (or studio 10) , sync it together, edit, add whatever fx and there's your poor man's movie studio.

Shogun. not so cheap in my opinion. I don't have a mixer $$$ or multiple programs to control$$$ not to mention mics and all the little sit.
Most drummers are not tech savy and niether am I. So, it would be nice to know a true poor mans method. Is there one?

Dude.. my mics are the cheap 7piece CAD for 200 bucks and my mixer was used for 150 bucks.. my software was copied for me from a friend.. most likely totaling less than the video camera you own.... so yea.. about as cheap as you can get..lol
Cool i've been looking at those mic sets. i use to have a bunch of sound enforcment gear. I got rid of it all. Everything is digital these days. I wonder if a decent drum demo could be made with a web cam like home por*.??

Hi Jay!
This video was recorded using a Cannon ZR65c and the only micing was thru the little condersor mic in the camera itself.

The audio isn't bad for what it is, but you want to look for a camcorder with an input. The ZR65 used does have in input; I just didn't think to set it up that way for this particular performance.
I hope that this gives you some good information to go on.

This was always a particular subject area that I wanted to improve. After making friends with some tech-saavy drummers on myspace, I finally figured it out. I had the proper equip. but didn't know how to use. I'm using the 7 piece CAD mic kit(which sounds great for the money). I'm not using the OH mics that came with the kit, but I'm using a Shure PG 81 OH and a Shure SM57 snare mic. All others are the CAD tom and kick mics. I'm using a Mackie powered mixer, but for a cleaner sound and cheaper price, go with a Peavey or Behringer passive mixer. I downloaed Adobe Audition 1.5 for free from www.christiandl.com. I love it and has great effects and easy to use. I run all of this through my laptop. I capture the video with a Kodak digital cam. Then I synch the sound and video with Windows Movie Maker. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I always hated using the sound from my dig. cam. I wanted a recorded sound with my drum cover vids. Check out my newer vids on YouTube then check out some older stuff and you'll see the difference. Hope this helps someone

the video i have on youtube was taken with a digital camera that can do videos for 3 minutes or so. i dont know how he uploaded it but im guessing he just used a USB cable from his camera to his computer and then uploaded the file. i didnt pay a single penny. just knew something with the right camera. and the sound is actually pretty decent.
im at school so i cant give youa direct link to the video(damn smart filters) but if you search "Pat Ruhland" its the longer of the two. the 30 second one is dumb, unless you want to see a blast beat haha.

I uploaded my video from the digital camera using a card reader. Then, I mixed the A/V together and uploaded to YouTube. I will say this about YouTube. They sometimes have a slight A/V lag after you've synched your stuff together. In other words, the audio may be a slight hair off from the video. It's usually not too bad. It's got something to do with their server, compression and what not. It's luck of the draw. Myspace has never given me a problem with that. So, if this happens just make sure your original vid is spot on and don't sweat it. If the lag is that bad, re-upload the vid
