 2 cymbals together?
my mate says in the new foo fighters video, taylor hawkins has a ride with a smaller cymbal literally underneither it, as in on the same stand with no felt between. what's that about? i've refused to belive him as this sound retarded. anyone heard anything about this?

This is very common, dude.
Called a stack by most, I believe.
Look at people like Mike Portnoy.
He's got a few.

i actually did this for awhile... i had an old broken 22" ride cymbal. On top of that i put a really thin felt (just enough to allow the top cymbal to move a little bit) and put a broken 18" crash on top of it. It gave me a really weird quick trashy China type effect, not a lot of sustain... but it was good for little quick rhythmic punches.
and it looked cool
i got the idea from Bill Bruford on King Crimson's RED album. (the song "One More Red Nightmare" to be exact)
also Jon Theodore from the mars volta does this too.
as does Zach Hill from Hella

i don't mean stacked i mean like a 19"crach with a 21" ride literally on top of it touch eachother with no gap in between. the smaller cymbal on the bottom, and no gap at all!!!!
stacking is not that!!!

It's just a sound that results from two pieces of metal clanging together. Any sound is retarded if one doesn't like the sound. If one does like it then it's a really cool sound.

video cymbals are used in shoots. these cut down on the volume which makes a big difference when you're working a 12 hour day. i used some when we shot our video at sir in nashville. it's hell on the wrists after awhile but definately makes up for bleeding ears. these cymbals are made welding 2 cymbals together. the stacking thing has been around for years, guys have been using them as a white noise effect.

Stacking means you put one thing on top of another. That's all it means. Sometimes it sounds fun. Sometimes it doesn't. It's just an "unapproved" or more noisy/white-noise version of high-hat cymbals. High-hat cymbals are a form of cymbal-stacking.

Paiste has some effect cymbals that consist of two cymbals stacked directly atop each other. Perhaps there is a similar thing Hawkins is going for?

Man, I hope you are joking. Because if you aren't I feel real sorry for you and anyone who has the misfortune of being in a band with you.

Yeah, that is used a lot for TV performances where the music track is a backing track and only the vocal is live. It is literally two cymbals spot welded or stuck together with adhesive so they don't make any noise. This allows the drummer to appear like he is playing live without messing up the live mix.
This is completly the opposite of real cymbal "stacking" where you are creating different sounds by putting two cymbals togther. I used to use a 20 inch ride with an 18 china on top that was hella loud and a great effect. I also was using a 20 inch ride with a chrome 16 inch roto-tom inner section on top for a while. Also very loud and trashy.

For a while I was using an x-hat and putting an 18" and 16" china together as a strange blend of closed hi-hats that was like a big wash of white noise.
Prior to that I was using a 12" HH top and a 14" china as a bottom hi-hat on the same x-hat stand. Sounds great!!
Oh and there is no "approved method" for playing your cymbals. If you want to put all your cymbals on the stands metal-to-metal (no felts) you can do that too.

I thinks it's like that so it doesn't ring for ages while shooting the video. He probably has it really tight so it doesn't sizzle that much. That's what i thought anyway because normally they just chuck aload of gaffer tape under the cymbal and it looks gay. Any one agree with me??
