Post 4-Piece Anyone?
I just recently changed my set up and removed one of the toms making it a 4-piece set. I have to say I like it a lot more. It gives me a little more space, more room to be creative with drum and cymbal placement and it seems to be more comfortable. I guess my style of music would have to be just rock in general, but not to complicated. More like alternative maybe even punk.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here uses a 4-piece set and if so, what style of music they play. Also, if you ever have, what were the pro's and cons (four you) about that set up.

Thanks, Jordan

i just did the same as u. I change from a four piece to a five piece about every week. I like having that 13 tom, but its just so bulky. I really like the ride in its place when i'm using a four piece.

I play mostly Ramones and Green Day in the band, and do alotta RHCP on my own.

I know what you mean. my toms are 12", 13", and 16". I'd like to put the 12" mounted and the 13" as a floor tom but the other snare stand I have doesn't go low enough.

I used to play a rediculous kit and have since downsized... mostly due to not needing an excess of equipment with the band I'm currently in. Also I'm in the situation where I do lots of touring, but load/unload/setup/teardown all my own stuff so less equipment can be a blessing there too. (I actually enjoy tweaking my own gear anyway) One of my kits has 2 18x22 kicks, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16" toms, etc.... I have it scaled down to 1 kick, 12" rack, and 14&16" floors and I LOVE it! It feels great to play, I can bring the ride in closer, and get everything lower on my kit (I like to play very visually so it also provides for fewer obstructions in front of me). I'd actually love to eliminate another tom but I use both floors quite a bit so right now they gotta stay.

i've actually heard from some people that a 4-pc set is the more traditional configuration. Janet Weiss (my favorite) plays a 4-pc and puts the ride cymbal in place of the 2nd tom.

the four piece kit goes back to the beginnings of the use of the drum kit. because the ride cymbal was such an essential part of jazz playing, it was placed more or less where the second tom is now placed on a standard five kit.

Post 4 piece
I've been playing mine for the past 5 years now. It's great because there's less to carry around. Plus, it forces you to be creative. Just a repeat of what some of the other guys have said. I play at church, but I get to play jazz, gospel, brass band, and some funk & blues when I get with my fellas.

I have to play a 4 pc kit w/ 3 cymbals tonight at an awards show. I am not digging it at all.
We play progressive/art-rock, and I use the toms a lot. I also like having a few flavors to choose from cymbal-wise, so this minimalist setup is not making me happy.
I've used a large kit in the past, and scaled it down over time to a moderate size. I've had a 4pc setup in my studio for a month or two now, knowing this show tonight would require it, but I have to say it has not made a convert out of me. It just doesn't work for our style of music.

the point is, no style of music actually requires more than the basic drum kit.

for me its all about the 4 piece drumset. I think it looks good and is the funniest to play. all I need is four drums, and four cymbals. and I'm good to go.
