 A custom vs. normal A's
I've been really thinking into what kind of ride I'm gonna get to replace my Zildjian ZBT. I've been looking into three possible rides:
-Zildjian 20" Medium Ride
-Zildjian 20" Ping Ride
-Zildjian 21" Sweet Ride
Both the Medium Ride and the Ping Ride are offered as both A's and A-Customs. What's the difference between the original and the A-Custom. And the A's come in both traditional finish and brilliant finish (the brilliant looking a lot like the A-Customs). Does the finish effect the sound at all?

Brilliant finish gives the cymbal a little brighter sound. also A customs tend to be brighter with more energy.

A-customs give off a bright sound

The above statements are true. When I was looking for cymbals I tried A Customs and they were a little too bright for my taste. I needed something to mix with my Ks so I tried the original A series and they were just dark enough to fit in and just bright enough to complement my Ks.

cool, thanks
Well, anyone have experience with one or all of the rides I'm considering. I want something with a loud a defined sound when I'm riding on it w/ the tip of the stick. Really be able to hear every individual note played on it. Kinda like you can hear every note on closed hi hats but with a ride sound. Nice and bright too. and a nice loud, consistent crash when I'm I'm striking it on the edges w/ the blunt side of my stick. The ride I have right now sounds like a gong when I crash on it and I want something that sounds big and aggresive.
I also want something that I can strike once and will crash loud and will ring awhile
The medium ride has some of these qualities but I've never really gotten to go crazy on it. Do any of these rides have these qualities? If not, does anyone know of a ride that will give me this sound.
And yes, before anyone says it, I WILL probably hit up Slauda before I make a final desicion and purchase on anything

I had a Medium Ride for a while and it has a long, full sustain to it when crashed and a good, defined presence when ridden.
the Ping is brighter and has a louder bell, but I haven't really ever had the opportunity to crash it.
Never tried out the Sweet.

Never tried out the Sweet.
I have the A custom Sweetride, the A medium, the A Rockride and the Z custom power ride. The Sweet is awesome as well is the Rock. Both are very versitle and sound fantastic. Rarely do I use the medium or the powerride. P.O.Y!

I have the medium 20" and it's great for riding and crashing. I use it primarily as riding but it sounds great either way.

Yeah, I done that before. I know some of the rides sound good when I ride on them but I haven't gotten the chance to crash the living shit out of it like I know I would if I were playing with my band

Take one or more of your existing cymbals in with you to compare. When you do, hit the cymbals like you would on stage. Tapping them isn't going to tell you anything.
If all else fails, GC has a 30 day return policy.

It sounds like the Ping Ride is what you want. It's what I use and I've tried about everything -- it is bright and pingy. A dry ride is not bright, just pingy. It doesn't matter much if you get it in A or A Custom because they sound very similar, though I always prefer Custom for the looks. The Custom crash cymbals have a much warmer, smoother sound to me, but I can't really hear much difference in the Custom rides.
By the way...why would you want to crash a ride cymbal?
This annoys me. We have crash cymbals for crashing, we have crash/rides for crash/riding and we have rides for, um riding. Why would you crash a ride? Is this some funky jazz think that people think is cool? If you want to crash your ride then don't get the Ping Ride, get a Medium or Sweet Ride (or just a crash/ride).
