I can make you a 10x5.

You don't want an 11x5, shells don't come in 11" diameter nor do they sell 11" heads.

I wouldn't go any thicker than 10.

I'm currently working on a 6 ply for Bong.

what are the advantages and disadvantages of a thicker/ thinner shell?

shells with more plies have less dynamic range (you have to hit them harder to get them to respond) but are louder and higher pitched. vice versa with shells that are thinner/have less plies.

given that, Brady drums I've seen (both the barrel-stave construction and the ones hollowed out of a log) don't seem to follow this rule. they have thick shells, but aren't constructed out of plies. they both have body and crack, and respond well at low volumes.

the timekeep guy should chime in on this. he seems to know what he's talking about, and has posted about drums with different construction techniques (as well as some pictures that seem to contain drums I'd be willing to take out a mortgage for).

What you said is pretty accurate, A 6 ply will be more sensitive than an 8 ply and so on. 10 plies are good for rock and louder types of music. Stave shells tend to defy drum physics because as thick as they usually are, you would assume that they would be as sensitive as a 30 ply and high pitched but when I made a 3.5 x 14 walnut shell that was an inch thick, it was lower pitched than my 7x13 and quite sensitive...go figure.

Since you asked about a popcorn snare, I'm assuming that you want a pretty good crack to it so I would suggest an 8 or 10 ply.

If you don't want to go custom, Pork Pie makes a Maple 12x5" Little Squealer that is very nice, Pearl makes a 6-ply Maple 10x6 Popcorn Snare (with SuperHoop II steel rims! and Masters series lugs! Stainless steel tension rods!) and a 10x4" Sopranino, as well as the cheaper Firecracker series 10x5" or 12x5" made of Poplar. You've got a lot of options in this area.
