Post Anybody in/used to be in drumline or drumcorps?
I was in drumline this season in my high school. I was also the captain, and this was probably my crappiest year ever in band, and the worst part is it's my senior year.

Well, this year I was on tenors (quads) and for some strange reason wanted to be captain. Well I must say that this last season was a huge waste of my time. I used to be in a great drumline (as well as the whole band itself) in 9th and 10th grade, but I moved to a new school in 11th grade (which is still the school I attend now), and the drumline... It's okay, not the worst, but not the best either. But what I can't stand about this school's drumline is how immature they all act. When band camp started, that was probably the best time the entire year (as far as actually LISTENING to me), but the rest was blown to hell. It's almost as if the line as a whole was bipolar or something. They all just immediately quit caring when school started, they never did a thing I told them no matter how firm I was, it was like I was just there. People started having ego-boosts like crazy too. I'm suprised I didn't just bail out on them, I was really tempted to. God, it was almost depressing in a way. I tried to care, but when they started REALLY disrespecting me and the director I lost all care, I knew they weren't gonna listen to anyone. And did we ever win a trophy? Nope. Maybe it was bad of me to loose my care, yes. But there was really no point in even trying anymore. So as a result, I wasted a good 3 or so months of my life I could've used to take a more important class like English or math. But no worries, I won't ever have to worry about that again, thank God... And the band as a whole just sucks. And the sad part is even they say that.

Sorry if I turned this thing into a bit of a rant, lol. So is anyone else here in a drumline? Or used to be?

Ahh, that sucks. I was really tempted to join the band (our school has a really good one), but the kids really bothered me. I don't mean to be harsh, but when you have a bunch of losers who get massively inflated egos, it's not pretty Smile

Anyways, props on the Death ava!

Haha, thanks. Chuck still lives!

But yeah, I hear ya on the egos part. For me though (before this season anyway), band was really fun despite all the huge egos. It taught me some new things every year, and plus I probably wouldn't have much rhythm today if it weren't for band, lol. It was like one of those things I'd be lost without, which is probably why I still took it this year. I sure know one thing though, I'm gonna miss it other than this past season. My best season was probably my 10th grade year, which where I learned how to keep a good beat (I had absolutely no rhythm in 9th grade, lol).

But there was one good thing about this season though. Every Monday and Wednesday we had two guys from college instruct our drumline, and they taught me a lot (double strokes, proper sticking and what not). That's probably about the only thing I'll miss this year.

Nice. It's good to see I'm not the only one, lol.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna join college marching band/DCI. I know I'm shooting for jazz ensemble, along with other things as well, but I have to see what all the college offers.

my highschool drumling nothing but pure crap
we were good... when we wanted to be
but hell they did shit most of the time
my jr. and sr. year i was drumline captain
and same with you they listend for awhile but
nothing once the season started..sigh
in college hell of and improvement
its like going from public school to
military, i was snare line section leader
senior year i felt like i owned them
they listend to every word i said and followed
me like i was paton or something
i loved college

and then i did maddison scouts
oh hell.
to sum it up
its like you go into the best damn thing
of your life while enduring hell at the same time
it was pure military, you sneezed during warmups
the whole line ran. you opened your mouth to say bless you to the guy
that sneezed you personaly ran more than the line.
and because you get more of a workout than the line, which is unfair to the line
they get to run after practice and because your part of the line you run with them.
i swear by the end of the year we all could run a marathon, we ran that much.
but the music was amazing drill was amazing the proformances were perfect
it was def the highlight of my whole marching career.

still to this day i fear sneezing and saying bless you.

Yo bro. I played tenors 3/4 years of high school, did Snare my freshman. Love tenors. Captain my Jr. and Sr. year. My HS line sucked too, but its all cool. I had good people on the line that couldn't play, so the experience was fine as a whole. I'm in an indoor line at the moment, and it rocks. Sorry it had to blow for you, but it just does sometimes, got to learn how to roll with the punches. Love drumline though.

And what corps/college you planning on?

i marched all 4 years in high school. three on tenors. my senior year, i was the first drum line captain that didn't play snare. i strongly considered joining drum corps, but didn't for some reason. at the time i probably had the chops to join a fairly decent one. not phantom or anything. are they still sweet? my set chops suffered greatly, though. i didn't even touch a kit for almost three years. then got in a band my senior year. my only fond memories of high school involve playing drums.

Nice. You could never get my line to do any of that. If they were told to do that we'd be out there overnight, lol. But yeah, college does sound like it's a blast. Which is the reason I sometimes randomly blurt out in band class: "I can't wait for some college buddy!" lmao. But I'm still thinking about whether or not to join. I might.

Currently I'm planning on starting out at a community college then transferring to Appalachian State University. I hear it's one of the best music schools in the state of North Carolina, and the whole US as a matter of fact. And plus it's real close to home (approximately a 2 hour drive from my town so I hear). And the band there seems to have a great reputation. So yeah, lol.

Now all jokes aside. I have nothing but great things to say about my high school Marching band experience. I started in 8th grade. on side line percusion where I learned to play melodic instruments. Marched one year of second bass and then fell in love with snare my last two years. We did not have the problem like you speak of we acted like a single unit. Yes there were egos but we all were on the same page. We ran that damn band like the teamsters of old. One time we actually canceled practice unbeknown-st to the band director because we had all purchased tickets to the Rush concert that happened to fall on practice night.could you imagine the rest of the band standing on the feild saying where is the drum line?

I played tenors in WVU's drumline from 1998-2000. I was tenor line section leader in 1999 and drumline captain in 2000. I went on to play tenors with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps in 2000 and 2001. Center tenor in 2000 and split center in 2001. I now play drums in a metal band, OFFSET. The drumline experience played a huge part in my chop building and vocabulary. METAL ON!

Caldera,

AppState is a very good school. I've heard nothing but good about the music department. Couple buddies go there and are in Drumline.
