shure beta 52 or Blue kickballs are great for bass drums Audix and AKG make great mics I just forgot the models. Overheads I prefer large diaphragm, studio vocal mics, as overheads.

I use an Audix D6 for my kick, just picked up a Blue KickBall that I use on my floor tom, and I use Audio Technica AE5100 over-heads. Choirs seem to find them comparable in sound quality to $2k+ mic's. I know I like them.

would it be a preference to remove the reso head of the bass drum to achieve a full sound when recording?

You won't get a full sound from removing your resonant head, you'll get a cardboard box sound.

I use the old standard for kick: AKG D-112. We have Stapes small-diaphragm condenser mics for overheads, and I'll usually set up a couple of large-diaphragm condensers for "room" sound.
If I had unlimited money, I'd buy a matched pair of Earthworks small-diaphragm condensers and as many Neumann U-47's and U-87's as we could store.

It works for some genres and not for others. And you always have to work with what you've got.
