Post Bass drum pillow or no pillow
I've got my new kit all set up and tuned real nice. I noticed the sound of the bass drum doesn't sound as good when you are playing (behind the kit) as it does when you are in front of it. The drum projects very nicely and has a good punch and tone to it. Is there any reason it would sound strange playing behind it and it sounding great in front? I'm not sure if I should put a pillow in the drum or not. It has no port in the reso head and it's an 8 ply pearl birch VLX. Any suggestions?

All that matters is how it sounds out front.

Well if it's cheap stock heads then put a pillow. But if it's a durable two-ply like an Evans EMAD I or II or like an Aquarian superkick, then it isn't necessary because it already has pre-EQ'd sound!

Let's not forget the Remo Powersonic. I'm liking that head a lot the more I play on it. Smile

Now I am interested in the Powersonic Head.

Using a Powerstroke 3 Batter with an Evans EQ Gate system seems to work well and it gives a lot of punch as well as a nice tone when playing live

^^ Exactly. It may sound good, but that pillow cuts down on resonance and projection, therefore it's softer than a unpillowed kick.
