Are you talking about how Ludwig cut it?
There really isn't a proper bearing edge cut.

Most older kits have a 45 degree back edge with a round over on the front.

Do you want to know cuz you like the sound of older Ludwigs, or because you have some older Ludwigs ? If you have older Ludwigs, don't mess with them IMO..Other than that it depends how old they are..!!

i have a 20+ year old ludwig drum, and it just had to be re-edged, it just kinda wore down after 20 years of getting smacked around... unless it's a museum piece, I wouldn't feel bad about having them touched up if the drum is a little dead... or if they're flattening out or something... there are a few guys in nyc that do a good job... i had mine done at Drummer's World on 46th. Tell Barry I said hey!

I do stand somewhat corrected..if the bearing edge is damaged or uneven and you can't tune it that would be a different story..!!

What's do you think is the reason for making the Yamaha Tour Customs with a round 65 degree edge?

If there's only one thing I've learned from working on Hondas, it's this. Don't question Japanese engineering.

I know Jimmy Chamberlain had his cut to a specific degree
on his latest Smashing Pumpkins kit, but I really don't understand
why. I mean I guess I understand why, but I'm too lazy to try it or care about
it.

It boils down to how much of the shell touches the head.
