 Black marks
On the coated heads I bought a couple days ago, black spots have started to form. Why exactly does this happen, and does it hurt the sound at all?

Not to worry, the black marks are just an accumulation of dust and dirt that happens to transfer from your sticks to the impact point on the drumhead. It's not going to hurt anything, it's just a natural thing, kind of like the smears and distortions that happen to a clear head after a while. It's merely the nature of the beast.

I kinda like the way heads look when they get dirty too. It adds a classy look to the set.

Yeah, but try to make the marks on the tom toms as small in diameter as possible

if you've recently polished your cymbals you'll get some black marks on the tip of your sticks transfering to your drums from polish residue.

I love the look of the black marks. It's like a head losing it's virginity.
I hate shiny and new....
