 Break drum heads?
Do you guys break drum heads? how often. the only heads I ever break are my snare side heads from tightening them so tight. i never put my stick through a batter head. I break stick and cymbals as much as anyone else. but i dont really understand how people break drum heads so often. I always use 2 ply batter heads so that might be part of it

the only head ive ever broken was a bass head, and i was using plastic beaters without a patch so the beater went right through. i dont know how hard you have to hit to break a snare or tom head because ive never done it and id like to keep it that way. i decided to stop breaking cymbals too so i havent done that in a while, and my sticks usually wear out before they snap. its not that i play softly, i just use proper technique.

I haven't broken one in my short 3 months of playing and I hope I never will. You'd have to really be rockin' out hard to break one it seems to me.

every thing wears down and will break eventually, but alot of other factors play a role in tht, like how the head is tuned, wht type of head it is, the thickness, the type of stick and head on it, how hard u hit, and other things...

I've broken heads before, it's no big deal. I haven't broken a snare head in about 6 years, simply because I change them every 6 months. Tom heads I break on occasion, but I do play hard and put on the best possible show that I can for the people that come to see my band and pay money to do so. I will say that I've broken fewer tom heads since I switched from Attack to my current Evans G2s.

I've broken one snare batter head.
I think it was partially that it was old, but I had put that thing to good use as far as hitting. I am a hard hitter usually (which I am working to tone down) but I haven't even come close to breaking a head since. Sticks and Cymbals are a different matter.

Do Marching Tenor heads count? If so, I've broken ("popped" is the technical term) about 10-15 heads in my lifetime. On my kit, two bass heads, a snare head, and a tom head. The tom head was starting to crack slightly, and one day it just gave, and my stick went clean through it. Probably improper tuning had something to do with that. The snare head was old, the bass drum heads were old too. The marching Tenor heads are cranked WAY higher than any drumset head. There is almost NO give in one of those heads. Play on a wood table. That's kind of what the tension is on a tenor head. Same for the Kevlar heads too.

I've broken a couple snare heads, due to me being cheap and not buying new heads as often as I should .. and like everyone else I've slammed through my share of bass heads with plastic beaters and no patch. Cant say Ive ever busted a tom head though.

the verdict here seems to be that most ppl break heads only when theyre old and dried out.
