That's an old trick from the jazz camp.

What you want to do is pick a spot in the backyard that you can dig down about 12 inches. A good way to remember the placement of the cymbal is to string some nylon rope thru the hole and tie it in a knot underneath then take the loose end above ground and tie it to a cinderblock or other object. Then just let it sit for awhile.

Another way to "season" your brass is to get some mallets and do crescendos on the cymbal to "tame" it down a bit. And I recommend ear protection because you'll want to really lay into them and keep that volume up for a litlte while- make 'em roar!!

Some normal felt-head mallets. Those will work just fine. Nothing too soft. Smile

A friend of mine buried his ride cymbal for a couple of months
It came out looking like an earth ride
It must be nice to have so many extra cymbals that you canj ust bury them
I can recall lots of Modern Drummer articles where the old jazz guys did this as well

always a great way to add the darkness to your cymbals Twisted Evil haha.
I may try it on my cymbals soon, they are too bright at the moment.

I am way too vain to dirty up my cymbals, they are my shiny diamonds, hahaaha. I even switched to brilliant finish so the lights shined brighter on them.

wow i've never heard of this before!

I used to play Zildian Ks, i love the dark, warm sound of them, but they didn't handle live situations very well... After a year of shows, i ended up cracking most of them!

I recently got some Zildian A Custom Projection crashes, but they're definitely brighter than i'd like.

How long do you recommend burying them for? Does it vary depending on the size of the cymbal? After you dig them up, what do you do to clean them? Just your run of the mill cymbal cleaner/polish? Or just brush 'em off and leave the dirt? hahaa

i would guess that you just brush them off....polisthing them would reverse the effects.

I have never heard of either one of these methods. I just take the cymbal and play it.

is there a certine way to do this but, ensuring that the cybol will not become too marked up. I really am lookiong at "breaking in" my cymbols. I really like the way that my old ones sound but, i like the new cymbol feel. Kinda crazy but, what ever.
