I would say jazz or jazz/funk. If you like that kind of thing, check out Joshua Redman's elastic band, or some Medeski, Martin & Wood. I'm not as familiar with fizz and sly, but I definitely want to check more of their stuff out as well.

Could this be part of the reason you're switching to 3 piece?

lol, you can read me like a book. yes, him and some of the stuff i saw benny greb do is the main reason i've been playing around with a 3 piece kit. i would love to be able to play half as good as this guy.

i can only recommend checking out his myspace and maybe looking at some of his influences. i myself am not really that knowledgable in this genre when it comes to recommended listening. sorry i couldnt be more help. i saw a few posts above SmellsLikeIan recommended Joshua Redman's elastic band, Medeski, Martin & Wood. so thats where i'd start. thats more help than i can give you right now.

That would be Jazz/Fusion! One of my favorite things to play, and to watch.
My favorite fusion group is Cab. Dennis Chambers (Virgil played with them too), Bunny Brunel, and Tony McAlpine. Fusion is the best! Some vid of them rehearsing.

I'd say it's a jazzy drum solo, break beats, has some slight jungle nuances.
Have a look at early "Squarepusher" if you like Jazz mixed with high density rythms. beware, electronic music ..
I like his drumming very much...

Wow, I used to listen to a LOT of squarepusher back in the day....red hot car and port rhumbus are pretty cool songs. I never thought I'd see someone mention him here though...

Yah I was thinking it was funk, and I was close. But you know, not that I think about it, it is probably even closer to jazz... Jazz/Fusion, I just don't listen to that type of drumming much, so, it was slightly difficult to figure out...

Something you may find somewhat close to this style would be "Aquarium Rescue Unit." They haven't put out anything in a while I don't think so they may be a little hard to find but they are incredible musicians. None of their stuff is really as crazy as that guy but then again not many bands do drum solos on studio CD's now do they?
