 Chain or belt drive?
Hi. I'm wanting to buy a pearl eliminator single bass drum pedal. It states on a website it comes in belt drive or chain drive. Can anyone please tell me the difference and what you'd recommend i get? Also, what is your view about the pearl eliminator? worth its money?
Thanks, Thomas

Welcome! I use double chain drive DW pedals though have never messed to much with pearl. I have heard alot of good things about them. As far as the difference between belt and chain I have heard it said that the belt drives are a bit smoother. Peace on ya!

i've only used a belt drive a few times, and here's what i noticed. because a belt is much lighter than a chain (especially a double chain), you're pulling less weight down with your footboard every time you step on it. the spring on your pedal is also pulling less weight up every time the footboard goes up. because the entire unit that the footboard is pulling (footboard, beater, beater bar, chain, cam, spring resistance) is lighter with a belt drive, you get that "smoother" feeling. i suspect you can get a similar feeling with a lighter footboard, but it won't be the same because the chain is located differently, and therefore your foot interacts with it differently. just trying to use my common sense to give you a sensible reply

It's an excellent pedal.
I bought one with a chain, then ordered the belt, so I have the option of switching it whenever I want to.
The belt is very inexpensive...maybe $15
Why not have both?

I like pearl BD pedals.....
as far as belt and chain go, I have the iron cobra hi hat that has belt and it is SO SMOOTH....so I would probably go with the belt

BTW...Virgil Donati and Omar Hakim both use the pearl eliminator with the belt and the blue cam.
I'll have to try that combo; I'm using red right now.

Belts are smoother but stretch and need to be replaced periodically (depending on how much and how hard you play) where a double chain is going to feel rock solid and allow almost zero lateral play in the footboard. I like belt driven pedals but I play a DW5000TD, with a double chain.
Eliminator pedals are the only pedals besides DW that I would willing buy.
