 Chris Adler's drumheads
I was just watching the Modern Drummer video with Chris Adler and i was trying to piece together what particular heads he uses from Aquarian. It looks like Response or Super II clears on the toms, Force 1 clears on the kicks and of course the Hi-Energy on the 12" snare.
Anyone had any experience on the Force kick heads from Aquarian? Might look into them as I've been into the superkick II's, but his set up seems to work pretty well. Also I'm assuming the resonant heads on the kicks are Regulators with 4" holes.

Chris doesn't use triggers, does he?
Anyway, you're correct. He uses response 2's on the toms. The Force 1 head is pretty sweet. It's gives you that really focused type of sound. The Superkick has more of a resonant boom if you know what I mean. For metal, I think the Force head is better.

Almost every metal album record since 1995 has some triggered drums.

Adler triggers his kicks, yes.

Yeah I know but the reason why I asked is because they mic up his bass drums at all of their gigs. They never sound loud enough.

Usually the venue has more control over that, can't really blame him
The trick thing to do is run both triggers and mics, but time and money are limiting factors. Another common thing now is to run triggers, but sample the sounds from your own kit

I don't think they mass produce them, but Chris Adler is special enough he gets a custom order one.

Triggering and using mics does kind of seem pointless unless you have enough money you've run out of ways to spend it. How about those sub kick mics? I'd been interested in those.
I'm thinking as soon I get the cash I'm going to go for the Force I to replace my current SKII. I'm going to try run it with no internal muffling of any sort, just the regulator front head with the 4" hole and see how that all does. I was thinking about going for triggers, but after having a band need to use my kit and listening from the crowd point of view, I really really like the way it sounds.

a combination of triggeing and micing is the best way to get a nice clicky sound that still had a nautral tone and body

True, but it's still pretty cost prohibitive. Also usually the kick is pretty deadened for triggering right? It dosen't seem that there would be too much much body to speak off although I can't say as I don't think I've ever seen a band live that was triggering and micing.

he wasn't triggered at the Modern Drummer gig, and his kick sounded amazing. i don't know about the studio but from that show it didn't seem like he needed it.

yeah true on the modern drummer deal. not to mention he was using axis then and most people tend to trigger with axis. his kick sounded like it has plenty of punch to me. now using the DW9000's he shouldn't have a volume problem.
