I think it's worth mentioning that cymbal set up seems to be kinda determined by how you set your drums up..... if you have your toms at a steep angle, it often seems that the cymbals follow. I tend to have a very flat tom setup which means my cymbals fit the angles my toms are ( i.e pretty flat). That way, I don't have to change my hand position or technique to move around the cymbals or play quickly etc. It helps me to flow better. A good test I use is to see how easy it is to play a double stroke roll all the way round the kit..... if my toms and cymbals are setup nicely then I can roll round the kit pretty randomly. If not, I notice pretty quickly!
I mostly use a kinda trad jazz setup.... I have a crash on a straight stand to the left of my tom partially (but only just) over the tom..... the ride to the right of the tom (on a boom) .... and my other crash on a boom that stands over the right portion of my ride bell. I have all my cymbals set as low and flat as possible. In a way, you can kinda imagine the ride replaces the 12" tom.
If I'm using a 5 piece kit, I have two crashes set over the 2 rack toms as low as possible (about 6-8 inches above the toms), the ride sits over about a third of the 12" tom and a crash over my floor tom. for the extreme left side, I use a couple of splashes.... one roughly where an 8" tom would go and another level with the top of the high-hat pull rod.
