Grrrrrrrr....
Sorry, but it's one of my pet peeves...

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "BEST".
It's all subjective, based one one's opinions and personal preferences. Using the phrase "best" is such a lame crutch, that we as drummers really need to get rid of. So please, for my own sanity, and the love of all that's holy, everyone please quit asking "what's the best" and just pick who you prefer.

You can be objective about this. It's not like we're gonna' hurt anyone's feelings here... So... Danny Carey for playing in odd time & polyrhythms but Mike Portnoy for technical chops. I prefer Danny by far. I just saw Tool in August & Sept. 4 the 1st time in my life & love most of their music. Most of Dream Theater's music suxx in my opinion. I did like "Pull Me Under" from 1992 though but nothing compares to the new "Vicarious" or "The Pot" tunes. That's it!

How can you say that Dream Theater's music sucks? You've got to at least respect it even if you don't like it. Portnoy's one of my favortie drummers to listen to so maybe I'm a little biased but in my opinion Mike Portnoy is lightyears ahead of Daney Carey. I know Carey plays some screwed up rhythms but if you listen to the second Liquid Tension Expereiment CD Portnoy plays some of the most sick and twisted rhytms I've ever heard. In my honest opinion, Carey has little else going for him but some fast feet and he plays for a legendary band.

 Carey vs pertnoy
Been a long time since something caught me like this one. I have spent time learning both drummers music. to say one is better than the other is totally ludicris. They are both awesome musicians. THey have totally unique styles within themselves. Both bands would not be were they are without the pounding rythyms of these two. Why would you want to judge either player?they are both awesome and have spent years learning and years making a very good income doing what they do. My hats off to any drummer that can do what these two can do and to anyone who has the ability to do pick up a pair of sticks and not abandon them after the find out the music business is not a bed of roses

I've seen both of these guys live numerous times and own basically every album either of them has ever played on. The bottom line is Mike Portnoy plays the same kinds of things as a lot of other drummers, he just tends to play them better. Danny Carey on the other hand plays stuff that few others can duplicate. If you ask me Portnoy is just a show off where Danny Carey waits and builds and then blows you away with an incredible flurry of speed, finesse, timing, and coordination. He's the total package. There was just a post on here the other day asking 'who you thought was better; Brann Dailor or Danny Carey' Danny Carey is probably our best contemporary "mainstream" drummers. If you listen to the stuff he does with VOLTO! or even Pigmy Love Circus you'll find he is an incredibly versatile drummer bringing alot more to the table then you might think... With that being said, these discussions are somewhat silly. Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, or even Steve Smith or Billy Ward would probably shame the both of them...

I agree with scream kevim, there is no shuch thing as best...
but as far as "overall" unles we saw each guy take a shot at all diferent styles of music, tham maybe we could say something.
I'm a big DT fan and have seen Mike play live, he is one of my fav. drummers, alongside with Carter Beauford and Joao Barone and I have seen them all live, and mikes energy on stage is awsome, he is such a good performer, you got to give it up to those guys that go out day after day performing their hearts out everytime. hopefuly I'll be able to do that someday.
those 2 are awsome drumes pornoy is my favorit out of the 2, but I cant say wich is better them the other

I've seen both live, and both are excellent, but I prefer Danny Carey because his pocket is stronger. Mike Portnoy is looser, with sort of an eratic feel IMO.

I know Portnoy is a great drummer, I met him in 96 at a clinic he did(really opened my eyes to cymbal choices, just cause it's $$ doesn't mean it's good). With that said, he's always felt kind of rigid to me, he's good beyond measure, but just like Neil Peart, he's rigid. Danny has an ability to push and pull a beat, and does not limit himself to conventional drumming, if something sounds interesting, it goes. To me, Portnoy is an example of what a great drum education can get you, fantastic chops, nearly limitless speed, and the ability to play drumset so large most people would faint at the sight of it. Carey is a well educated drummer as well, but uses it in a "I know this is the rule, but fuck it, I'm doing it my way" mentality. Thats my take on it. Tool is a way more listenable band as well, DT appeals to one kind of crowd, musicians.

haha dont worry about it dude!! im a big dream theater fan. but im also a big tool fan! both drummers dont stop awing me in the way they express themselves. mike portnoy is a class drummer!! and danny has pulled of some pretty complicated stuff!! no drummer is better than the other!! and to the guy who said dream theaters music sucks?! your crazy you havent really listened to the music at all!
i havent seen dream theater live but its on my to do list. ive seen tool before and they play exact to the album which is class. i dunno if this is a right statement but dream theater from dvds etc play differently.
like they could go up on stage and play there songs note. but they from what ive seen play more virtuosic! like add extra fills etc play things differently! i dunno thats my opinion!
haha to mess things up even more you should have said this who is the better player, Daniel or Adrian Erlandsson??
both play melodic death metal!! lol so practically the same style of music.
