i really dig his work with chick corea. he has a knack for triplets and one-handed rolls, but i wish he would use more than that in his solos.

I've always thought he was a master technician, but when it comes down to it, it's not always musically satisfying. His stuff is cool in a drum-guy sense, but it can get pretty old pretty quick (to me).

i agree. i have a friend whose the most skilled drummer i've ever met, but he always plays the same 3 beats with the same flashy techniques.

He's an ass. Outstanding player, but an ass none-the-less. He plays really hard, too.

I watched him set up for a clinic. His attitude behind the scenes is a tad different than his public face.

One of my good friends is a monster drummer from Southern Brazil and Weckl used to be his idol. We were working together at the drum shop and he got chosen to set up Weckl's kit since he wasn't a salesman...clinics are big sales days. So, you know, the kit wasn't set up like a professional roadie who'd done it a few dozen times. Instead of coming in and just fixing the small problems he started bitching about "what idiot did set this up?" and "why can't people just follow directions!". Then there were the mic's. All wrong, take them completely off and start from scratch...RIGHT NOW. I was like, "maybe he's just having a bad day, dude?" Then our manager chimed in with, "no, that's pretty much how he always is."
And I must say, for as sheer bad-ass as he is his control is pretty bad. He plays all over the heads. It took over six months to sell the snares he used because nobody believed that he was the one who played the hell out of the heads. I mean, not just playing in two or three different spots...everywhere. I think they finally ended up changing the heads to get them to sell. The kit with cymbals, on the other hand, was sold by the end of the clinic day. Even that guy didn't want either of the snares.
Don't get me wrong, he's a bad mofo and I truly do respect that. My first drum teacher had me watch Back to Basics a few times.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from.
Can't be denied that he has skill. XD

I'll second that. I found him to be a self-centered prick not once but three times that I met him in person.
I used to own all his music. After the last time I met him the first thing I did was throw his iTunes folder in the trash. I just can't listen to a person who comes across so ugly in real-life.
