Post Do drummers have egos?
See, I was always under the impression that taking pride in what you do and feeling good about the art you create was supposed to give you self confidence. I thank God or w/e its called every day for the fact that I am a drummer and I am talented at what I do. I don't think its the same as having an ego because if I had an ego, I would think I was the best drummer in this town, but I clearly don't. There are so many people in this faceless sea of drummers out there who completely smoke me, but I am still proud of everything that I have done so far and I feel good about everything that I play, even though I might not like it sometimes. I guess having a little bit of ego to go along with it just comes naturally, but I do my best not to display it to anyone outside of my bands and other drummers. Do you guys feel the same way or are we just conceited dickwads who just feel good about meaningless shit that probably won't effect anyone outside of who hears it, let alone 90% of anyone who pays attention?

Of course we do, we have to. If we were completely self-less, there would be no drive to want to be better. Better than we are, and better than the next guy. Why, because we feel good about it. Ego is not necessarily a bad thing. If you don't think you are the shit, than why would anyone else. Twisted Evil

There's a fine line between confidence and arrogance.

Confidence is knowing you're good but can learn more.

Arrogance is thinking that you're the best and there's no more to learn.

As a drummer, you always know what you can do well and what you need to work on. I feel it's more important to be humble and not have a "big" ego. We all have an ego to an extent, it's called confidence! Anyways, I have a lot of drummer friends and we like to get together to share ideas and different things we've been working on. That's the great thing about drumming, is that every drummer is different and you can learn something new from anyone! So, I think having a big ego is bad, a little ego is all about confidence, and being humble goes a long way.

1 thing in drumming is the fact that most people realize that they cant be the best at every genre and style because we only have one lifetime to do it and to many styles.

Death Metal music needs death metal drummers....they aren't more geared towards "groove" and "flow" but more of keeping perfect time and playing as heavy and fast as you need to fit the riffing and whatnot in the songs.

Groove is based on much slower time signatures and just about anything BUT straight 16th notes. Groove has variance, diversity and emotion. Not all people can get comfortable to do such a thing. There are drummers WITHOUT groove out there and i dont think it should EVER matter.

People just think they're the drum police and whatnot and get egotistical when a drummer can go faster and play harder or groove better and play more styles.

I guess in drumming theres a HUGE reason to be jealous because theres no way of entirely mastering it.

So what im saying is that Ego comes from a lack of understanding and appreciation for other styles just because people think their superior to the other which in fact they are not.

Every style comparatively has its Pro's and Con's no?

Let's try not to make this another "Death Metal vs Groove" thread...it usually just turns into a flame war. Wink

Personally, I like to think of myself as a confident, yet humble drummer. I know what I can do, what I strive to achieve and I always watch/listen to other drummers and try to pick up things from them.

I think Ego is when you cross that line from being confident and seeking to improve and become arrogant, self obsessed and thinking you know it all.

I don't think so.
I think that bassists and drummers are the least susceptible to getting an ego.
Lead vocalists will almost always have egos.
And guitarists may or may not. Depends really.

I agree with everyone here.
It's one thing to be confident.
It's another to be arrogant.

I've run into my fair share of drummers who, shall we say, lack modesty. I always give them the 2 rules of drumming:

1. Faster isn't always better.

2. There's ALWAYS someone better than you.

Everyone has ego in their chosen endeavor. It's healthy to have a self-assuredness that gives you confidence and the ability to know that you **can** perform well.

However when people choose to allow their egos to precede them in everyday life is when their insecurities appear and one gets branded an egomaniac.

If you are good at what you do, be thankful. Further that talent and realize that there's always something to learn.

I have a huge ego
However, I make it a policy not to allow my ego to intrude on one of two situations
1- I keep my mouth shut when I don't know what I'm talking about (concert toms only sound like shit, when people who don't under stand how to use them ha ha)
2- I recognise when I cannot control a situation (acting like a dick to the people who work in a club and burning bridges with those that I need in order to succeed etc...)

My latest project is a direct result of my massive ego
I have lots of ideas and yet cannot find capable players that will indulge me (either they suck or they want to get paid or have no time because they are in 5 other bands)
Therefore, I just decided to do it myself
Later on, I will have proven myself enough to dictate to others how I would like the music performed
Far less talented people have an entire backing band, why not me?
This does not mean that i plan on beng a tyrant, but it does mean that equal staus will only be given to someone I consider to be an equal

Lastly, I believe that a large ego is crucial for anyone who dares to believe that they can do something different and/ or innovative
After all, who the hell am I to think that I can do anything new or different?
No such thing?
My ego will not allow me to believe that

Lastly, I have been experimenting with the amount of ego I allow others to see
Due to the knecapping I experienced after my last band debacle, I considered that my ego was holding me back
In the year or two since I decided to scale back, I have discovered that the people who have taken part in my successful endeavors have done so when I was being egotistical
This has proven to me that I cannot be anything other than what I am
And what I am is an egotistical (albeit charming as fuck) person who created more opportunities the old way than the new way
Obviously, you cannot be a complete arrogant prick to everyone, but I have learned that people wil tolerate quite a lot as long as you deliver the goods

Oh yeah
I tried being a quiet nice guy with women and got none
Now that I am an egomaniac again, they seem to be more willing to participate
But then again, I like crazy bitches

Post Le'go my eggo
Everything alive that has a sense of self, has some degree of ego.

It's not having the ego that is the problem, it's the degree of the ego one has.

It's also a matter of maturity. The ego is a powerful thing that can be misused or used constructively. Immaturity is what reveals the hollowness of the ego, the person, or surprisingly, the absence of the ego.

For certain people, it may not be a good thing to mix motivation for life goals with the matter of ego.. Just look at all the problems we see in the world today - it's all related.

But I don't want to get too philosophical on any fellow drummers. I'd sound to religious or whacky... Surprised)

I just have one thing to say. The background on Thomas Lang's computer... is Thomas Lang. (Watch the bonus stuff on Creative Co-Ordinataion) I found this really amusing. I mean, yeah, he rules, and I love the guy. But if that doesn't scream ego, I don't know what does!
