Post Do you know the lyrics????
How many of you folks know the lyrics to the songs that you play? Hmmm... interesting is it not? I caught myself looking at some of our videos and realized, what the hell is Marc saying? I guess that I get so wrapped up in what I am doing behind the kit to keep the song right that I forget that it is so important to know what everyone else is doing or in this case SAYING. Accents, dynamics and fills can be based off of the lyrics of a song. Has anyone else caught yourself in this situation? I have decided that it is a goal of mine to learn ALL of our lyrics. I believe that it will help our band be better and help me be better for our band. P.O.Y!

After a while I get 'em ingrained in my head. Not right away. Takes maybe a month.

I dunno why, but in every band I've ever been in, I always memorize the lyrics. I find when playing with a full band, that I focus on lyrics more than a lot of other stuff, or at least used to. Now since the two bands that I am in don't have a singer yet lol, I focus more on guitar/bass.

I have them in my mind quite fast, actually I have written a great deal of them. Helps a lot with playing. Sometimes a sing along quite loudly and wonder why I lack oxygen Smile

Let me elaborate abit. I know a majority of the lyrics of all of our songs...just not all of them. I catch myself wrapped up in the instrumental parts and tune the lyrics out. Maybe just a habit of mine from being in a jam oriented band for the previous couple of years until our current band. P.O.Y!

I sing on several songs in one band, so I'm kinda forced to with that one.

I don't really know the lyrics, but I know the vocal patterns. The singing is just like another instrument

Good point Steve. For me, my OCD kicks in, and I HAVE to know the lyrics. I even have a lyric site bookmarked so if I hear a song on the radio and am unsure of the lyrics I can check when I get home. I once thought about approaching Guiness Book of Records to see if I could qualify for a non-vocalist knowing the words to the most songs. I figure I might know close to 5000.

WOW...I can barely remember the lyrics I write, heh. That said, I can still play any song I've ever played with any band with no hesitation. The punk/pop band I recently started playing with contains members from an old band I used to play with, and they were amazed that I still knew the old songs note-for-note, including their parts.

That in itself is a challenge. I remember songs I used to play, but usually kinda rough.

I must qualify: EXCEPT any double kick parts. My feet won't move as fast as they used to, cuz it's been years since I've practiced double bass. I can still do it a bit, but I pretty much suck on double kick at this point.

I'll forget how a song starts, but as soon as I hear the first note it all comes back
