Post Drum Heads for Gretsch Renown Toms
Hey everybody! I've been using EC2 Clears on my toms and thought they sounded pretty dead on my new Renown kit. I was talking to Tommy Robertson in Austin when I was there on business recently and he said that because of the more blunt 30 Degree bearing edges and the weight of the die-cast hoops I should consider going for a more open sound. I had an unused set of G1 Coated laying around the house and slapped them on. Haven't played out with them yet, but on these drums I was amazed they have a full, round, warm tone with few overtones. Believe it or not it sounded much improved than the sound I was getting with the G2 and EC2 clears!

i played on a gretsch renown at the college i used to go to. it had the g2s on it stock, and after 3 years they were beat to death, but it still sounded great. i got tired of it though, put some old pinstripes i had on it, and it still sounded awesome. the school finally broke down and bought new heads, i had them by ec2 coateds and it sounded great as well. its just one of those kits..that can sound good with anything.

I preferred the sound of single ply coated heads on my Renowns.

I would say change the reso heads if you haven't yet. They had the typical paper thins on my Gretsch. That made the biggest difference aside
from PJ recutting my edges to double 45's.

Right now, I'm using EC2 coateds as batters, Remo Ambassadors as reso's. When I need reso's again, I will most likely change to G1's.

heh GO TOMMY!!! That guy is pure gold.

Seriously, to any one of you: if you're EVER in Austin, at least stop by Tommy's. They don't have the hugest selection of kits I've ever seen in a shop, but they do have a good selection. They have a ton of specialty snare drums and cymbals, tho, and great selection of heads, sticks, percussion, etc. The main thing is the people that work there. They will bend over backwards for their customers. Just amazing service from some really nice folks.
