Post DW drums
Maelstrom: When I was looking into getting a nice kit, I thought of maple or birch... And of course so many people dreamed about DW. then I went into a store and told them to set up a DW kit with a Pearl Masterworks, to hear the difference. And I couldn’t really tell. And I cam to the conclusion that as long as you’re getting top of the line, it’ll be top of the line.

Derek Roddy: Everybody that makes drums nowadays makes a killer kit. I’m here to tell you that the $300 percussion plus kit that you can buy – with cymbals and everything – are made 100 times better than the top of the line Ludwig kits were made in the ‘60s. Period. Bottom of the line. They are. Technology has gotten that good.

But the things you pay for are attention to detail. I’ll tell you a story. I work at Resurrection Drums, down here in Fort Lauderdale. We’re a Five Star Drum shop, and we carry every boutique brand known to man. And we stopped carrying DW because every order that we’ve had in the last two years for a customer has come fucked up! Every. Single. One of them.

Check this out! The last one we ordered, the guy wanted Glass Glitter. He wanted a 22x18" kick, and 10x8", 12x10", and 14x12" toms. But they made everything for him backwards. So they made him an 18" kick drum that was 22" long, an 8" tom that was 10" deep... (laugh) I mean, do fucking drummers work at this place? Haha! You know what I mean? What the hell is going on?

I had another guy order a Timeless Timber kit from DW. He reached in to pull the kick drum out when it arrived at the store. You just spent $3,000 on a bass drum – it’s the thing you want to see! Opens it up, puts his hand in there, and the drum is soaking wet with lacquer, still. It’s like they spray painted the thing, put it in the plastic, and sent it to us. (Laugh) It was like, “holy crap!” I’ve never seen anything like DW, man, I swear. So, who’s going to make a better kit for you? DW, that makes a $5,000 kit and makes about 600 of them a month, or Sonor, that makes TWO of them a month. Sonor doesn’t sell a lot of drums, because they’re so expensive and nobody really knows about them. They’d be lucky if they sold two Designer kits a month. Lucky. When Sonor makes a drum, everything – even the screws – are made in their factory. There’s no outsourcing of anything with them. They’re the only drum company that can say that.

Discuss.

I agree with anything top of the line is gonna sound top of the line(aside from Trick), I would love me a bubinga Masterworks, Starclassic.

The whole Percussion Plus thing is just wrong. No way Percussion Plus even touches Vintage Ludwig!

The whole DW thing sounds like they were fucking up the orders. If a guy gets the right specs, just in the wrong place, that's a miscommunication of the dealer to DW. I doubt DW fucked up every order there was, that's just a bogus statement. If the laquer thing happened, that's a bad fuck up on DW's part!

Sounds like Roddy is a spokesman for Sonor, which make some great drums as well! However, everytime I hear Roddy, his drums sound dead. I guess he likes them all muffled up.

Well the fact is, is that he wasnt endorsed by Sonor when this interview occurred. He was just saying how DW has messed up every order people have placed through them. In other parts of the interview he states the fact that since DW drums have been making their own drums, they've been terrible with plies falling apart and whatnot.

derek roddy plays death metal, when your fills are going at 240+ bpms's you generally dont want your toms ringing out. and yes certain things about a $300 shit drumset these days are better than a vintage top of the the line ludwig. back then they didnt make hardware that stayed where yoyu put it, if you played your drums they wobbled, i'v seen old drums with no bearing edges on them, needless to say, they didnt sound very good, they didnt know how to make things well back then. but take a vintage ludwig, and put it next to a brand new cb percussion drumset, ignore the fac tthat the lugwig looks liek it would fall over if you sneezed too hard. and listen to the actual sound of the drums. the ludwigs gonna win

Derek also writes that hes a complete sound fanatic. He states that most other drummers in that genre could care less "hey sounds pretty good whatever" but derek states that hes completely all about sound and gear. In this interview he owned 7 kits at the time and that would probly make 10 by now. Just because rob doesnt like the sound of his toms and whatnot doesnt mean a whole shitload of people dont think that his toms sound awesome, in fact on youtube he got a ton of comments on his toms and snare and how good they sound.

Sorry, bro, but I tend to disagree with just about everything you had to say about DW. I'm on my second DW kit now, and I'm more than satisfied with their tried and true drum shells and customer service. I definitely disagree with just about everything you had to say about DW. A 22"DEEP by 18" DIAMETER kick drum isn't even an option (unless you're terry bozzio and can get whatever wierd sizes you want)! And wet drum shells???? That's abit wild and lacks any bit of logic (to anyone aware of the dw process, that is....which you should be well aware of as a representative of a drum shop/retailer). Painting of any kind (laquer, stain, even covering) is one of the first steps in the process of making any drum. Makes sense, right?? Are you going to paint a drum shell AFTER you've cut the bearing edge, drilled AND lugged it?? No!!! If you support Sonor; great. But don't beat down another drum maker in support of your drums.....
Let's think b4 you post, please

My drums are mapex twat. I didnt say anything about mapex in here. Those were derek roddys arguments, a professional drummer whos worked in retail forever. If he thought DW drums were great hed be saying good things about them. He just knows what hes seen.

YOU should think before you post. Dont tell me what to fuckin do you rich fuck.

I was thinkin' the same thing....how could the drums still be wet? I mean, after the hardware and heads go on, they are tuned and shipped out. You think they would notice if the paint was still wet....Who knows? Derek Roddy could be talkin' out his ass for all we know, unless you know him personally and know he's a very truthful person. He's probably just pissed off at DW for not giving him an endorsement! Laughing

Hes not that kind of person. When someone posts a video if they're an up and comming drummer or a noob he compliments them on the good things they do and critique them little. He never mentions gear at all. He wasnt even endorsed by Sonor at the time of this article. Basically you 2 are just sticking up for a consensus that really should be brought down to a proper level.

I'm not sticking up for anything, I just think it would be kinda hard to have wet paint on sent drums. IF it's true, then that's pretty fucked up on DW's part. I've said that before. I take hearsay with a grain of salt. I need proof.
