finally got around to taking pics of my kit
after many, many months of procrastinating, i finally brought my camera to band practice and took some pictures of my kit. pretty basic set up, i know... but i likes to keep it simple...
specs:
drums: i made 'em. logo on the kick says 'emma's drum company'. it's a joke. i don't consider myself a 'company'. turquoise sparkle wrap:
20x14 kick
12x7 tom
14x14 tom
13x6 snare (green pearl with black hardware)
cymbals:
15" sabian AA top / 15" sabian AA sizzle bottom OR 15" Zildjian mastersound bottom
19" zildjian A projection crash
22" zildjian 80s ping ride
20" zildjian k hybrid ride
hardware:
DW 9700 cymbal stands
DW 9500 hi hat stand
tama double tom stand
ludwig "low" snare stand
pork pie big boy throne
BOA kick pedal with slug beater
the drums stacked in the back ground are 10x7, 13x11 and 16x15 toms
extra cymbals stacked in the background include a 20" A projection crash, 20" Avedis crash, 20" K crash / ride and a cracked pair of 15" mastersound top cymbals.
snares:
(from left to right:)
13x7 refurbished tama limited edition artwood in black sparkle - all hardware replaced except hoops: added tube lugs, nickleworks throw, re-cut bearing edges, new vents.
12x6.5 hand hammered brass snare by a company called "diamond drums". never heard of them. won it on ebay for $140. not bad considering the nickleworks throw and the tube lugs are worth that much alone.
13x6 custom snare. see description above. has all the bells and whistles down to the puresound snare wires.
i also have a purecussion headset kit for practices and the occasional gig (usually when i'm playing multiple venues in one night) drum sizes for that kit are 12,14,16,20.
it sounds much better than you'd imagine, which might not be saying much.

Schaaawiinnnnnnnnnng! Very niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. How do ya like that 20x14 kick?
Im getting hammered for getting a 20x20. Im talkin about cutting it down to a 17, but I have to do it fast cause they are close to being finished.
Love the natural wood hoops with the turquois too....super classy look.
How do you like the EC heads?

all maple keller. toms are 6 ply, bass is 8. both maple snares are 10.

love it. nice bell. good wash. nice stick definition. works great with my crashes as well. i'm really pickly about my rides and this thing isn't going anywhere for a very, very long time.

love it. on top of it's practicality (good luck fitting a 20x20 kick in to the backseat of a car), it has fantastic punch. i'm actually thinking of building a 22x14 in case i needed something that could kick a little more ass, but i'm totally happy with this. i've got a bum shoulder so i've got to keep things low and close together. the 20" kick helps me accomplish that.
not to knock your choice of sizes, but i really don't understand those crazy deep kick drums. seems like the new 'cool thing' to do. in my experience, they usually sound pretty junky... at best, they sound no better than my 20x14 or, say, a 20x16.

like 'em a lot. not a big fan of the snare heads though...

Did you do all of the woodworking yourself or did you order the shells pre-drilled and cut? I'm still toying with the idea of putting a birch kit together with 10x8, 12x9, 14x11 toms with and 18x14 kick, black hardware and non-offset tube lugs.
The kit looks really nice, good job.

didn't do the edges. don't have the tools. hopefully this summer i'll get a table set up and i'll start practicing.
on my last snare, i actually had john at amdrumparts do the drilling and stuff because i was super pressed for time getting a kit done for a friend of mine.
honestly... i totally advise building your own kit. i think every drummer should try their hand at drum building at least once... even if it's just a snare. it really is a lot of fun...
... and if you're good at it... you're going to save yourself a ton of cash...

Right on. I'm going to practice my layouts on the kind of cardboard tubes that carpet comes wrapped around. They just throw it away, so the cost is right.
And I know what you mean, to a small degree. I had a blast putting my Acrolite together. I had to strip my first snare which was a now out-of-round steel shell CB700, then I replaced all of the inserts in the Acrolite's lugs with the ones from my PDP LX snare so I could use those tension rods.
I was thinking about seeing what PJ would charge to do the wood working and then assemble the drums myself.

i don't know if they still sell them... but drumfoundry.com has layout mats that really work well.
