Post Fixing inverted china cymbals...?
I have a slight problem. I recently inverted one of my china cymbals (16") in a way that there is no curve on it anymore; sort of looking like a bronze pancake.

One rather hard and snappy strike on the apex of the curve caused the curve to fold and fall in...

Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, were you able to fix it and how...?

I've heard of inverting chinas by putting them upside down on the stand, but I didn't think inverting them meant actually changing the cymbal itself. I have my china inverted BTW.

So a flat pancake, eh...

try pliers to bend the curve back. who knows? it may snap back. IDK. If not, use pliers and put a wavy curve in, and have a new sound!

Oh, how did this happen?

I hit it with one snappy strike. It now sounds like a piece of corrugated iron...

eeeeeew. like the sound or not? well I'm guessing not. Step on it or something! One of my cymbals flipped through one time and I remember fixing it by standing on it. I hope that helps!

m really confused as to how you did this. did you have the china set up with the curve going up or down?

Curve going up. Hit the curve, the curve folded... A friend of mine suggested dipping it in ice cold water followed by hot water then cold water again... All I got from doing that was a wet cymbal. Standing on it hasn't worked yet, maybe I need a fatter guy to step on it... I'm a step from grabbing my saw or drill or something. See what sort of sounds I can come up with in the process Wink

Still, If anyone has an idea of how to fix this...........

well, even if you do get it back to normal it will still be warped. but luckily its a china and they're make to sound trashy. but china's have that flared out shoulder for a reason...... its where the strength is. i know a lot of people play their chinas inverted like that for some reason, but hitting it on a weak edge which isnt really ment to be hit will result in bends and warps and stuff.

I've deceided to make a wall-clock out of the damn thing.

I've spoken with my retailer who said it was a defect in the metal that caused this. Offered me a new one. But since I'm now bent on the idea on making a clock and already have two chinas in mint condition I think I'll keep the little retard...

Order a new one from saluda and send your old one in for credit towards your new china.

You can do that? It doesn't matter how badly damaged or what brand?

I dont believe theres a limit to how trashed the cymbals are because they do a recycling service.

Check out the prices on the saludas anywayz THEYRE DIRT CHEAP compared to the big 3

and sound like the big 3 too

i love my 19" earthworks crash!!!!!!!!

What kind of discount do they give you? I'm sure it depends on the size but just a rough estimate.
I liked the way the Earthworks looks but I have no way to play these cymbals to check 'em out. No stores around here carry them so it's hard to get an idea what they sound like. I know there are several big fans/endorsees on this site and don't doubt their judgement for a second...I just wonder if they're right for me.
