Post Fixing old snare's bearing edge?
Hey everyone, haven't posted here in a loooooong time! Good to be back.

I haven't used my old snare in a long time, but it's been beat up quite a bit in it's days. it's a 2001 Yamaha YD 700 kit snare.

What i want to do is put on fresh batter and res heads, but i noticed some wear and denting on the edges on which the head sits. I was wondering if there was a safe way to fix this up.

What i was thinking was to take a peice of very fine grain sand paper and wrapping it around a round wood block, and securing the drum with a clamp and working my way around the edge. I'm only worried that i might sand it down unevenly, or change the angle or something like that.

Anyone have any ideas, short of taking it to a drum shop? We're getting together on Sunday (2 days from now) and i'm looking for a safe, quick fix.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Call a pro. I am talking to Medicine Man's PJ about working on mine. That would be a start.

Get with PJ (Timekeep). I'm sure that he could give guidance. If all else fails, Buy a new snare from him. Mine sounds awesome! Peace on ya!

I know you want to attempt to fix it yourself but working on a bearing edge is tricky. Having a pro with experience is the way to go, even of it costs you a little money, it's better than ruining an otherwise nice drum. I tried my hand at it on an old-beater shell and I had mixed results. A router is the best tool to use but it's best to be skilled in it's use.

Bearing edges are tricky. If you ruin it, you ruin the drum, the only way to save it is to cut off the edge and start over which is even MORE work. If you want to send it to me I can re-cut them for you, the problem will be shipping, it's going to cost you roughly $20 each way plus the cost of the edge itself. PM me if you are interested and we can go from there.
