Going to Summer NAMM? (austin tx; July 27-29)
my whole band's going, would be cool to meet some fellow forumers if anyone's going this year. I think we're going to book some shows while we're there.
the Winter Session in CA was awesome; I hear this trade show is much smaller and more intimate.
Just curious if anyone here's planning on attending

Ah, NAMM...I wanted to go to the Winter one since it was so close to where I was but it was a "Trade show: not open to the public." I really don't understand their elitist philosophy since I'm a drummer and I'm interested in most things drumming. I was going to try to go anyway as some type of pseudo legal representative for drummers but in the end figured it wasn't worth it. Mainly because I didn't wanna drive from L.A. to Anaheim only to not be let in. I'll always want to go but I guess since Modern Drummer doesn't have me on the cover all the time it doesn't matter, they wouldn't have me there.

Yeah, I'd really LOVE to go, seeing as it's only about a 2 hour drive from my house, but like you said it's a trade show. So, it sucks.
Congrats on getting to go though, have fun!

Yeah, maybe what I should do is refuse to buy any of the products unveiled at NAMM . I mean, these products are meant to be bought by the public at large and the public can't see everything when it is being introduced...and one can't rely on the local drum shop for total up-to-date drum information. Hmm...

The purpose of the shows is for music retailers to show their new products to DISTRIBUTORS, not the general public.
The shows have never been officially open to the public but people end up getting passes anyway. It wouldn't be so bad if the general public would act professionally while they were there but there are always the groupie types hanging out.

PJ, do you attend the summer sessions?
This will be my first- just wondering what to expect.
I've seen the list of exhibitors, it does look pretty small compared to the CA show, but it looks like it might still be worth attending.

No. I only go to the winter show. Typically because the summer show is further east. If they keep holding it in Austin I may make an occasional summer show.

Yeah, I realized that. But I spend quite a bit of money every year on drums and drum products, it would be nice to know what is being unveiled for the next year and just browse. As for how the NAMM stuff actually gets distributed in reality...ha, take the Paiste Twenty line of cymbals for example. They've been unveiled at NAMM and Paiste has spend a fortune advertising for that line. However, a huge distributor Guitar Center, won't carry that line except in their highest volume stores in the California, Florida and greater NYC area. I'm interested in that line of cymbals and it would make more sense to market the item to me because ultimately I'll BUY it rather than try to hook a disinterested "bottom line" distributor...but then again the economics of the music industry are strange at best.
