Post Help me out, left side floor tom?
Ok, so I was watching some drumming videos on how to improve my double bass and my little brother who's 9, came up and asked me why Joey (on his old set) had another floor tom on his left side, as the drummer from mudvayne does (i think) and I looked at him and honestly did not have an asnwer, so I'm wondering if someone can help me and answer it for me

He's rich enough, it probably just helps with a few fills, so he buys another drum.

Either that, or it's so that when he does 8th note patterns of:

FFSFFFSFFFSFFFS

F= Floor, S= Snare

He doesn't have an awkward cross over for the snare hits. That would be my reasoning to do it, anyway.

when i first got my eight piece i had a floor tom on each side of me to do double builds(usually done with a snare and a floor tom). then i realized i could make up rediculous fills with 5 toms in a row. eventually i fazed it out and now my 16" floor tom sits in a corner only used when needed.

left side floor toms make for some very cool fills as well as awesome beats. most people play the backbeat on a snare but sometimes a floor toms just works better. when i got my yamahas i set up the 14" on the left and played a 10/12/16 and i loved the configuration. when i get to set the kit up again i will probably put it back like that.

here's the deal... If youre a right handed player and you lead with your right, your left is your slave hand. when you do triplets or 16th's your left is the "slave" hand. if you rocking a flooor tom usually and then you swith it up to a left side 14 floor it can sound either backwards or like something new. you can rock snare patterns on a floor tom wit some hi-hat wihout stretching and being "un-economical." granted a 14 cant be considered a "floor tom." but yes, like a few guys mentoned previously you can get some cool different patterens from a left side tom.

you can also create faux double-bass patterns if you tune the FT low enough (and you don't already have a double bass setup)

I use an FT on the left because it helps break up fills and can be much easier to get to in certain situations.

i recently tagged my old 16" floor tom to the left of my hi-hat. i wanted the deep rumble of a 16 but i only have a fusion and couldn't afford to buy a new pearl floor tom. finish is an issue as well. i can probably imitate it if i want to, but i know that they don't make drums in my finish anymore.

I find having a floor tom on each side makes tribal beats very easy

i placed my 16" on the left, alongside my accent cymbals, for deeper, more tribal beats.
