 I'm going Insane
Hey im a new member to this website and i'm totally loving it. I have been playing the drums for almost 2 years now and have recently became very serious about making myself the best drummer i can be. I do have some questions to be answered though. I have a tough time enjoying my time playing the drums for this reason, i see myself not progressing at all, i find myself playing the same re-hashed beat i played the day before, i have taken lessons, but for money reasons i had to stop. Does anybody have any suggestions or tips that you practice when trying play something totally different and that will test you? Also I want to see how many people suggest that formal training is the way to go to learn the drums, i have a friend who didn't and turned out to be a great drummer, but maybe its different for some people. I find myself in a "rut" how do i get out of it and stay out if it cause its driving my insane. I also want to post a video of me playing and maybe getting further suggestions. The feedback would be greatly appreciated and thank you to all who reply.

about 70% of rock music uses the straight beat ( 2&4 on the snare and 1&3 on the kick) so you will use the same re-hashed beat over and over anyway. the best challenge you could give yourself is to play along to the radio for 1/2 an hour a day. that way you have no control over what they play and everything will come at you fresh. and change up your radio stations as well so you get more variety. don't sweat on always getting it right just focus on the foundation and in little time you will develop some awesome chops! (stewart copeland once said "if you want to impress me play a straight beat unwavering at a slow tempo for 5 minutes")

Instead of playing drums... Get really baked and listen to a drummer that you really like... It always works for me.

Find some nice complex songs to learn! For me, bands like Death worked out great - enjoyable music that's very complex with a great drummer. It eventually got to the point were I could play through 3/4s of The Sound of Preserverence. Now I'm working with some Cynic, mainly to help my jazz playing a bit.
That's the best advice I can give you. Find a band you like with a good drummer, and give it a whirl.

yeah, pretty much what everybody here is saying. get inspired. sit behind youtube for a day, listen to stuff you wouldn't listen to normally, go see a band you hate, go see a band you love, check out totally different styles and drummers.
some old funk guys helped me a lot in breaking the rockdrumming rut. now i still play rock music, but with jazz and funk and even hiphop in the back of my musical head.
stop focussing on technique and playing the drums for a while, and just get out there and find stuff that can help you out.
cheers

There are a lot of videos on all sorts of drumming, info on drummers and video-lessons on drumerworld.com... Not like taking classes but it's a start!

When ever I get burnt out or bored, I'll go back and listen to the music that got me into playing drums in the first place. for me thats Zeppelin or ELP or some old Metallica. Or pull out one of my favorite drumming books, like "stick control" and just get lost inside the exercises. That usually gets my creativity going.
