I'm writting an essay about drumming
So my teacher thought it sounded more like a report than an essay I guess. He said he wants my opinion on why I think drums are interesting to play and hear. And I kinda touched on how enhancing a song with your own style without going overboard and being the foundation of the band and whatnot but it's not enough. We all know why drums are "da bomb" but it's hard to put it in words. Does anyone have any idea to help me out.

Compare it to other hobbies like sports and give the pros and cons of both. Explain the way drumming affects other aspects of your life and the personal influence that drumming has had over the person you've become.
Remember that a report is more about giving information while an essay is more about opinions or sharing your own views on a subject. Just try and write about yourself and drumming rathe than just drumming and it should be fine.

Good question. I guess I would touch on how good it feels to really practice something, and put your all in having it all come together in the end. Few people in the world actually have the drive and determination to play an intrument...good. It's nice to do something not alot of people can. Besides as I have seen written in another post "you get to hit stuff with sticks" lol.

Drumming is a form of communication. Drumming is good exercise. Drumming helps with abstract thinking. Plus it always better than sitting at a desk.

I had to write an essasy in college about drumming.
Drumming besides voice, is the first instrument ever to be played. and the first form of art, expression. I wrote about how drumming is feeling. You get to feel the art you make through your hands and through your body.
just a few things to get you thinking

I was gonna say the same thing. Drums are used for many things more than just making music. They are used in therapy (both physical and mental). They are also used as a means of communications, a language if you will.
You could research drum circles and things like that to diversify the obective of your essay. Many people use drum circles for company parties and conventions (Apple Computers for instance) because they encourage you to work with other people to achieve a greater goal. There are people that make a living by going from business to business initiating drum circles.
Pretty interesting stuff. Good luck.

I'll toss in a few things:
1. Drumming is the most violent thing you can do without hurting yourself or someone else. (Leaving out the occasional scrapes and whatnot)
2. You're living everyone's dream. Think about it. Say you're doing a gig for 1000 people. Out of those 1000:
-Maybe 700 have wanted to play guitar in a band.
-Maybe 100 have wanted to play bass in a band.
-Maybe 700 have wanted to sing in a band.
EVERYONE, at one time or another in their lives, has wanted to play drums, whether they actively thought about it or just tap on the steering wheel in the car, or at work on their desk, or around the house.
You playing drums automatically makes you the coolest cat in the room.

Last week the company I work for did exactly that at an annual rally they have for employees. Usually it's relay races and stuff like that. This year they hired "Boom!" to host a drum circle, to help people come together more as a community. My buddy Rob and I got a few surprised looks from them though. I guess we're the only 2 drummers who work at RIM. It was on company time, so it was one of the funnest 3 hour drumming sessions I ever got paid for!

an essay on drums sounds fun - i'd talk about the range of styles and the range of makes etc. also about the development and basically how it makes you feel when you play or listen to a solid drum line

Right on. I got sent away for a week last summer for a "drum camp". All on company time and a little spending cash.
