So I'm no expert at drums at all, but I've been playing rock band a lot. I live in an apartment, so I have to keep my drums at my grandparent's house. So I can't just play whenever I want. So anyway, I've played for maybe two years now, and I probably played Rock Band for like 20 hours this past 4 or 5 days. It has seemed to improve my dexterity and my speed a little bit. It has also helped me to not rush or slow down. It has also given me many new fills to work with, and helps in creating fills off the bat. I'm just curious if anybody else feels that Rock Band has helped them as a drummer too?

The instructors at my store have been discussing the affect that these games have on new students
It seems that the intitial reality of actually playing an instrument cn be a bit of a conceptual hurdle to overcome
This adds to the other difficulties that the beginner has to cope with on top of the frustrations asociated with learning an instrument
The drums suffer the least bcause it is closer to the way drums operate
After all, what is drumming but the process of striking targets based upon a pre-determined pattern?
The guitar intructors have it harder because guitar hero is more removed fom actual guitar playing than the drum counterpart

I haven't played it yet because I am poor and so are my friends but it looks fun
I like the fact that Buckethead is in it

depends on which way you take it
the actully drumming in the game
hasnt really got affect in real drumming itself
mostly because your just doing the monkey thing
red pad show up on screen you hit red pad
where as real drumming you gotta know
improve and to be able to do anything
with your own direct control over the drums
at any given time.

now. having said all that
it will improve your technique
in some sense mainly because your playing
practice pads. as long as you use proper technique
and actuly use some rudiments in your
playing of the game
then youll gain a little better technique

I bought rock band with all intentions of being great on the drum part. I totally suck at the drums on rock band. lol I am no wiz on a real set but I have been playing for 5 years. I just couldnt put the two together... I will stick to the real kit as to not lose any technique...

rock band+guitar hero=thumbs down. mindless entertainment at best.

What?!? No!! It's basically set up like 4 drums and a bass pedal. On real drumsets theres a bass pedal, hi-hat pedal, cymbals, and drums. They're hardly similar at all!

I can't figure out why people would spend valuable time playing these video games, rather than practicing their instrument. And that also goes for people that don't play at all. It seems to me that if they are intersted in these games, they are interested in playing music. I've only played guitar hero, and just a couple of times, but i've been playing guitar since 1992 and i laugh when people talk about it as if they are impressed with someones performance at it, due to the fact that it is nothing at all like playing guitar.

Agreed, I've seen people who dont play guitar at all and they beat a really tough song and they'l be all proud of themselves.

My Highschool band director was playing it and got annoyed when he was half way through a Rage against the Machine song and had barely played any guitar parts yet. Then the solo was wasnt even guitar but turn tables!

Oh, but even still, Rage NEVER used turntables on anything. It says right in their liner notes on every record: "all sounds made by guitar, drums, bass and vocals."

The turn table scratching stuff is achieved by running your hand or a pick up the wound strings
It can sound more muted when you use your skin and sharper with a pick or your fingernails
I thought it was a turntable as well until I saw them live

It's like rock band, but with a real drum set. You hook up your e-kit to your computer via midi and it plays a song and scrolls the drum tab basically. Most of the songs just use HH/snare/ride/htom/ltom/bass, but some include the crash and ftom as well. Some of the user made songs even have hi-hat and ride/bell detection for the songs.
