 Just Wondering
How many of you guys/girls play other percussion instruments... Like congas, bongos, etc. ? Just realized there wasn't an area to post topics of that nature.

I'm going to make an acoustic jazz album where I'm mostly going to play Congas, Bongos, and the Djembe. Maybe I'll get some kit in there, I'm hoping, but whatever. I'm just hoping the music is good so I can play some interesting stuff. I had a jam last Saturday with the guitar player, and in the first 10 min of the hour and a half jam I jammed my left ring finger, oh the pain, lol.

I've been playing congas for about 13 years now. They are difficult, well painful to play now due to some wrist issues, but I love to play them. If you go to the Nightcrawlers link, in my signature, and listen to African Echo on our myspace. I did the percussion on that track.

i play congas, frame drum, some timpani, and am in the process of learning mallets, specifically marimba. Percussion is great but nothing does it quite the same for me as drum set.

I don't specialize in hand percussion at all, but I can make some cool noise on congas.
I play mallets and tymps tho.

Yea, I got hooked on playing drums after I got a Djembe for Christmas. Besides my drum kit I have, 2 Djembes, 2 Congas, Bongos, and 2 Cajons.
I play in 2 different bands, one is a group of beginners and I play drums...the other band is a group of experienced musicians and they already have a killer drummer so I play secondary percussion...either way it's always a good time!

I have some cheap congas which I mess around with. Played the odd funky house night as a percussionist although never really had any formal istruction on percussion.
I also bought a really crap Djembe when I was hammered at a festival... it was painted in Rasta colors with the usual leaf painted on it. Sounds like gash to be honest, but made a great beer stand at the festival.
heard a guy playing one in London the other week and thought "yeah, I need me a nice one of them".

I play some percussion. I've been wanting to get a cajon for a while now. I think that's going to be my next drum purchase.

I wanna take up timbales and play that with other percussion items set up (cow bell, jam blocks, tamberine)
I wanna join a latin ska band and percussionist seems like a blast

Most authentic Latin bands don't have a drum set. They have a couple of percussionist's wailing away on the Congas, Bongos, Cajons, and every toy you can possibly think of. I like the Agogo Bells myself.
I play or played at one point just about everything. Drum set, for me, is my second primary instrument. I'm mostly a rudimental player, so Marching Snare and Tenors is my forte in drumming.
I've also played Mallets, that include pieces on both Marimba and Vibraphone.
Tympani as well. My favorite concert instrument.
And a little bit of piano, which is a Percussion Instrument, amazingly. Not too much of it though, I'm better at Jazz Piano than I am at Classical Piano, in the realm of literature and theory.
