Post Ludwig '74 Mach 4 drumset, choice heads?
Hi!

I'd love to get some help from you guys...

I have the occasion to buy a 1974 vintage Ludwig "Mach 4" drumset (with the long lugs) in "blue silk" for 750 €.
The drumset has: 22"bass, 13"tom, 16"floor and a 14"x5"supraphonic snaredrum.
The drum is in overall good condition, and the snaredrum is in perfect condition same goes for the chrome of the snaredrum.

Would 750€ (= about 850-900$) be a nice price for this set? Would this drumset hold some rockdrumming? Cool

Thanks in advance for the help!

To help you, this is a picture from a Ludwig Mach 4 drumset. This is NOT the one I'm going to buy, the one I'd love to buy is plus minus the same, only without the hardware and it has another colour...

mate id buy it and put it away for 20+ years then sell it for 10x the amount lol but thats me. go for it. it should hold up good. old kits are nice they usually sound better than newer drum kits.

I was wondering if you went ahead and bought that drum kit?

I had a similar kit in the late seventies and they were fabulous sounding drums!

Yes, I went ahead and bought the drumset a few days ago. It sounded great, but it needs new heads... So the real sound must be even better!

Any suggestions wich heads I should take?
For the toms I'm doubting between coated Ambassadors and coated Emperors. What would be the best choice? (I play rockmusic)
For the bassdrum I was thinking about buying a coated Emperor (batter) and a closed smooth white Ambassador reso. Would this be a good choice?

Way back when I had them, I was not a big fan of the Remo Emperor heads... I had Coated Remo Ambassadors on the top and Coated Diplomats on the bottom. They sounded incredible! I've never played a long lug kit with any other combination but I would imagine they would sound great with just about any modern head combo. I do know the way I had them setup they sure did sound great!

I wish you the best of luck with your "new" kit!

Thanks for the advice! What headcombination did you had on the bassdrum?

Wow. She's a beauty. I love Ludwig's drums. I'd try coated ambassadors.

I think I had the stock heads on the bass drum the entire time I had the kit... So that would be the equiv of a smooth ambassador on both sides. I Barely remember the kick heads other then it had the slanted Ludwig logo (Ludwig Industries) instead of the Ludwig script (ringo style)
