Post Mapex Black Panther snares - which genres do they work with?
Hi everyone, this is my first post here, but I've been reading threads for a while. I have a Yamaha stage custom kit and would like to upgrade the snare as I could never get the best sound from it, and the throw-off is a bit bust. I've been offered a decent price on the range of black panther snares, but they all seem really different and I was wondering if anyone has one if they could shed a small bit of advice on what it sounds like and what kind of genre of music it'd work with? Unfortunately I don't have access to any in local music shops to try.

I'm quite interested in the hand hammered bronze snare, though I'm looking for something with a warm jazzy sound and thought intuitively that the cherry maple one might be more suitable. I also play snare drum on its own so am looking for a sound that could complement that too. Do the hand hammered ones sound quite tinny and thrash-metally?

Any help is much appeciated, Caz.

any drum can be used for any style just based on tunning, head selection, playing style and muffling or lack of.

I'de go for a more standard size. I think they're the most versatile. When you have an exotic size ( like 12x7 ) TO ME it feels limited. But standard sizes ( from 14x 5.5 to 14x7 ) they just go further in more situations. But most of the black panthers are awsome. I like the deep forest series.

The snare in that link looks pretty cool... but yeah I'd feel safer with a more standard size as a primary snare. I'd kind of have to agree and disagree that any drum can be used for any style. I see what you mean, but it's more a certain sound I'm looking for to complement particular genres, and it's definitely not a sound I could get out of the majority of snares - with my limited tuning abilities anyway! I couldn't decide on a snare so blew off steam (and all my money) by getting a k custom dark ride and hi hats instead! Thanks for the advice.
