 mapex drums
I've been a member of DML for a couple of weeks and have noticed that a lot of people on here really like Mapex drums. Can anyone explain this to me? I, personally, have not really noticed Mapex until becoming a member. What makes Mapex a desirable drum set (compared to another company)? Do they have some special features/methods that are exclusive to mapex?
Hope you can show me some insight...

For me it's partly to do with the hardware - especially the isolation mounts. They are super solid and no other kit I've come across has them this solid across the board, the only thing better are the Pearl Opti-mounts. But the Pearl's still don't have the adjustability of the ball socket joints so the Mapex wins for me
Also the finishes are awesome even from low-end kits, the sound is awesome, and they are durable as hell. I've always played Mapex and probably always will, short of a custom kit

+1
also Mapex offers Walnut plies in their Saturn series for added oooooomph, which is unique from certain companies.
Try and name a BIG company that offers walnut on their kits?

also in the saturn and orion series your bass drum and floortoms are totally undrilled. the legs are attached via the Isolation mounts. which i think is a class feature. plus the drums come with remo ambassador drum heads. which saves on buying new ones when you buy! non of those factory made ut heads. (saturn and orion series only) im not a huge fan of the hardware. so thats why im using pearl hardware. the 2 plys of walnut def add an ommph to the sound. whoop yeah for mapex!!

i agree with everything above. my saturn kit is extreamly well built. with good care it will last me a life time. i love the finnish on my saturn as it is hand rubbed on. sometimes a cheap wrap can either choke the sound of the drum or peel off. ive even heard of some dw wraps peeling. you seriously have to check out how solid the mapex mounts are. the fact that they arent drilled into any of the shells on the saturn/orion helps preserve the shell over the years from the pressure of being played on. the tunning range on the saturn is fansatic too, giving you lots of options. the drums stay in tune very well too, very rarely do i need to retune my drums and im a freak for that!
i think mapex undercut almost every other company compared with what others offer for the same money. you would be hard pushed to find a better set of drums than the mapex saturn and imho i dont think there is a drum set at the same retail price anywhere near as good quality as the saturn and as ive said before im not biased just because i own 1, i had enough money to buy a dw, pearl reference, starclassic but after playing the saturn i knew it was the kit for me.
another factor you should consider is that compared to most other brands semi pro kits, the pro m and m birch are made of 100% maple and birch shells and are compleate with more stands than what most companys supply with their kits and the m birch comes with a free add on tom. for a while they were offering free soft cases with the pro m and m birch too.
its hard not to go on haha hope this helped explain why i choose to play mapex.
oh yeah its also pretty easy to buy add ons for you kit too!

I personally play mapex, and after playing on a Pearl set and some others demo sets, I won't play anything BUT Mapex anymore. Granted the demo sets wern't tunes for me, but the Mapex demo I played was by far the best. The isolation mounts are great for less vibratory interruption, and they do come with good heads (even though I'm an Evans guy myself) They just have a great sound to them, and are built carefully and extremely well.

Are you saying you never heard of Mapex? Or just not noticed Mapex?
They are good drums, hardware not the best, so if you buy them just get the sell pack, and get upgraded hardware. used to have a gretsh kit, nice warm sound as well, but I like the drum mounts on the Mapex better, so i switched when i upgraded. All the above post seem right on. Only other thing i dont like about Mapex is the chineese factories, but I still use mine, probably will until I can upgrade to an all custom set.

I'm really tempted to get a mapex saturn kit. At the moment I have a premier Gen-x, sounds awesome but i've had it for 5years and toured with it lots so i want to retire it before it gets too battered, and I'd like bigger sizes (at the moment it's 10" and 14" floor). Mapex do seem the best for moneys worth from what i've seen.
