If I get an acoustic kit, then it sounds like the mesh heads will be what I need. I will play in a finished basement, so there is no one below me. As long as I can hear and feel the drums, then I'm good. For cymbals, we will cross that bridge, I guess.
You won't really feel the drums, sorry to inform you. When you "feel" the drums you feel the air moving all around you (precisely why we seem to play the damned things).
When I was an instructor I would tell my charges this- Write a letter to everyone within earshot informing them of who you are, what you do, and when you intend upon doing it. Leave all pertinent contact informations, and MAIL IT to them. In the process, MAIL A COPY to yourself and leave it unopened.
What will happen is this-
1. Your playing will be "put on a routine" as in from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, there's drums to be heard. That's YOUR time to go and do your thing.
2. Should the cops be called, you can produce the UNOPENED, POSTMARKED letter showing that you indeed DID take measures to communicate with your neighbors regarding your plans.
A student of mine did this and had a problem with a neighbor. The cops came, and he showed them the letter. The cops went down the street (where Chris was barely audible) and told the lady that "It's OK for him to play drums because he exhibits responsibility and consideration....you need to get over it".
SO there ya go. Play your DRUMS, not a facsimile of them. Hey, if "Crankshaft" next door can run his table saw all day then you ought to be able to run yours.
