Post Mesh heads on an acoustic kit
Will putting mesh heads on an acoustic kit make the kit quiet for practice?

Yes. Mesh heads take away all the noise. You'll need to find something for your cymbals, however, as those will make noise, LOL. Something as simple as a heavy towel over the cymbal could work, or you could spend the money on cymbal silencers.

I used a mesh head kit when I lived in an apartment
The only noises my neighbors could hear was the clicking of sticks on rims and the tick of sticks on plastic cymbals
Those noises are still a potential problem for the inolerant neighbor but most cool people will deal
It's no different than hearing semi-loud music coming from another apartment

As far as cymbals go, I believe that most large hardware stores have big rolls of ruber mat material or other synthetic materials that you could cut into discs to put over your cymbals (cheaper than buying the same material packaged and sold at a music store)
It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to deaden the sound while being pliable enough to fit the relative shape of the cymbal and provide rebound

If I get an acoustic kit, then it sounds like the mesh heads will be what I need. I will play in a finished basement, so there is no one below me. As long as I can hear and feel the drums, then I'm good. For cymbals, we will cross that bridge, I guess.

Yeah
It would be mighty hard for the clicks to escape the basement

You won't really feel the drums, sorry to inform you. When you "feel" the drums you feel the air moving all around you (precisely why we seem to play the damned things).

When I was an instructor I would tell my charges this- Write a letter to everyone within earshot informing them of who you are, what you do, and when you intend upon doing it. Leave all pertinent contact informations, and MAIL IT to them. In the process, MAIL A COPY to yourself and leave it unopened.

What will happen is this-
1. Your playing will be "put on a routine" as in from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, there's drums to be heard. That's YOUR time to go and do your thing.
2. Should the cops be called, you can produce the UNOPENED, POSTMARKED letter showing that you indeed DID take measures to communicate with your neighbors regarding your plans.

A student of mine did this and had a problem with a neighbor. The cops came, and he showed them the letter. The cops went down the street (where Chris was barely audible) and told the lady that "It's OK for him to play drums because he exhibits responsibility and consideration....you need to get over it".

SO there ya go. Play your DRUMS, not a facsimile of them. Hey, if "Crankshaft" next door can run his table saw all day then you ought to be able to run yours. Smile

This sounds very much like the pods and modeling on the guitar side. The tone sounds like it's off the record and the feel of the speakers pushing you aren't there. Otherwise they're great.

I love what billy ray said. That's truth. As far as mesh heads...I wouldn't...A towel with do ALOT. and for the cymbals, you can get rubber rings at like home depot. Those choke the buggers right out. And for the kick, ( even though I think this is a sin against a drumkit ) stuff the kick with pillows.
