I dig Voivod, and Away's tone has always impressed me- what a huge sound!
I like their spacier stuff, not so much the metallic side. They really do cover a lot of stylistic ground, within the general 'metal' category.

good thread!

My first Voivod album was "Dimension Haatross"
My guitar player was always turning me onto new things since all I listened to was Metallica and Slayer
I also liked "Nothingface" (no, not the band of the same name)

Their style was a real cool mechanical feeling metal that wasn't like most of the techno based experimental metal
Away's double bass gave the music that macine like consistancy in
He wasn't trying to play more notes than you could hear
His playing complimented his album art
When I saw those pictures of giant juggernaut machines fused with human compnents, I felt that the drums fit the mood perfectly

Yet another band that stepped out of the traditional tough guy metal and onto the path less traveled
I didn't care much for the albums after Blacky left and never really got back into them once they became a metal band again

Away's playing on Nothingface is pretty incredible. very creative. and you're right, the double bass is so tasty.

I agree, I lost total interest when they went more metal after Blacky and Snake left. I really liked Piggy's (RIP) style too. It set them apart. He didn't have the same tones as other players. that typical heavy distortion sound. His sound was unique for the genre.
I'm liking their newest record Katorz (with Snake and Jason Newstead). The amazing thing is, they completed songs out of a bunch of tracks that Piggy recorded on his home computer before he died. pretty impressive. Word is, there are enough tracks left for another record that they'll be working on soon.

Away is in another project that is kinda experimental prog rock.
