You can never have too many cymbals. The more variety you have in cymbals, the more versatile you are. (in most cases)
What I want to know is what you guys think of combining Paiste Sigs with Zildjian As or A customs. Would they compliment each other and blend in or would they clash?

its possible to have too many cymbals but its only when you have ones on your set that you never use. my setup:
14" 2002 soundedge hihats
18" signature full crash
10" aax splash
9" radia cup chime
14" aaxplosion crash
18" zbt china
12" wuhan china
21" hh raw bell dry ride
18" aaxplosion crash
soon im adding a 14" wuhan china and possibly another splash or 2. id also like a darker crash.

Too many might get too costly
I used to have a lot of cymbals… all Paiste signatures, then they started breaking on me, ouch!! Replacing them hurts!
I switched to affordable UFIP. Mid-line cymbals. I have:
14" rough hats
14" crash
16" Classic Crash
16" Tiger China
20' Rough Ride
8" icebell

"How many is too many"
I would answer, "What is a trick question, Alek" haha.
Personally I feel most comfortable with a setup containing (I'm too lazy to list the names of each in my set up):
3 crash
2 chinas
3+ splashes
2 sets of Hats (one on each side)
my ride is a 18.5" Chad smith explosion (it's a crash/ride that I find works quite well)
atleast one stack (In my case I've used an old, cracked 10" splash and put a
12" china on top! It's super fast and super trashy)

 TOO MANY
if you have more cymbles then you know how to use then you need to learn how to use them, so i guess NO you cant have too many cymbles, and yes mix and match for great sounds i've tryed sets and they dont always match well, i have a 14''hh planetZ that sound really good for cheap zildjians but the same in 16'' crash is not good at all , so it all goes back to what do you think personally sounds good and go from there i have sabians that sound good and a 14'' rock crash saluda that sounds great.. personally i cant afford enough cymbles to have too many lol

I don't think think it's bad to mix cymbal brands however I personally prefer not to myself. I am a Sabian man myself however I am currently mixing cymbals right now. I figure it this way, I am piecing my cymbal line, just buy the ones I want rather than starting with a package jsut to get the same name. I'd suggest to just try out many cymbals and get the ones you like for hte sound you want regardless of who makes them. I also don't think you can have too many cymbals until they don't get used and are jsut taking up space on your kit.
My current cymbal setup:
14" Zildjian ZHT Mastersound hats
6" Zildjian A Custom splash
12" Sabian B8 splash
20" Sabian Hand Hammered Rock Ride
16" Sabian B8 Medium-thin Crash
18" Sabian B8 Medium-thin Crash
18" Sabian AA Metal-X Chinese

2 a custom projection crashes (19 & 20)
1 ride (22 ping)
1 set of hi-hats (15 new beat)
(depending on the band) 1 18inch oriental china
i never really understood the need for 40 cymbals on a kit.

most of the time when i just freestyle jam, i use
Sabian 18in med crash
Sabian 18in China
14in hi hats
18in crash/ride(used as ride).
but when i really wana play, i add a Sabian 14in thin crash that fliped inside out and i use it as a splash/china accent, and i add a Sabian 18in rock crash, Sabian 16in crash(cracked slightly, but i bought it that way cause i liked the sound, ive not craked a cymbal yet*knocks on wood*. im a big Sabian loyallist, but im switching over to Saluda for the most part. im diggin them.
as far as mixing, i have 2 really oddball mixes, my hi hats and crash/ride are made by Pulse in germany(the upper series they make) and the rest are Sabians. ill still use them when i get my saludas, but only when i want that sound. mixing isnt always bad, just a matter of what you like, you have to play on it, and hear it more than anybody else.
not really such a thing as too many, just un necasary. id say when you get cymbals and set em up, and dont use them more than once or twice in an hour long freestyle jam, ya dont need em. its true that its better to have and not need, than to need and not have. but cymbals are expensive, take up room, and situational. so be weary of gettin more than you need. i honestly dont think any of us would go and put 200-500$ in a ball of tape and put it on out wall or on a cymbal stand for no reason, so dont spend all that money on a cy mbal you wont use.

I don't see a problem with mixing cymbals if it gets you the sound that you want. Too many cymbals???? WHAT? You can never have too many. Peace.

I don't see a point in being concerned over mixing brand names, they're just names that don't describe how a cymbal sounds. It's more important to worry if a cymbal is bright, dark, thin, heavy, ringy, etc., and not if it's a Sabian or Paiste. All the major lines, and a good number of small companies, make very good plates.
If I'm playing a moderate to loud gig, I might mix Zildjian A and Z, UFIP Class, Wujan and Paiste Signature. If it more mellow or quiet, Dream Bliss, Paiste Signature and Traditional, UFIP Class, old hammered UFIP, LP Rancan, and/or Wujan.
