 mounting systems for toms
I pretty much just sold my Pulse set and now looking to buy a better kit which will hopefully last a long time. i was wondering when buying a new drumset, should the tom mounting system be something u should look into, cuz on my Pulse set the toms went right into the bass drum which i kinda didnt like much, but since i was considering buy a Pearl Vision, the kit did exactly the samething, but the other set i was considering, Tama Rockstar doesnt come with the bass drum size i want. any suggestions on what i should do?

I have a Pearl VLX Vision. It's great. It doesn't go right into the bass drum, just on a mount on the bass drum. The toms are mounted with ISS which is really good, I think. It's great, but that's just my opinion.

how many drummers worry about the tom mount system and then put moongel, duct tape, napkins, kotex, etc. on the heads to deaden the sound? why worry about the mounting system if you are just going to kill the sound of the head/drum itself with muffling.
the same thing appies to guys that just HAVE to have a "virgin" kick because it "sounds so much better" and then stuff their kicks with foam, pillows, blankets, etc.

Then there is the school of thought that a virgin bass drum is not so much about the sound, but the set up. If I mounted my toms off my right bass drum, my number 2 would be where my ride goes. Plus, toms mounted off a bass drum IMO tend to vibrate too much.

Tom holders that do not go directly into the basdrum or toms will provide maximum resonance so it is wise to get a Tama with rims omounting system. It will make life so much easier!

I've played sets with bass mounted and stand mounted toms, and the difference is just an eyelash. My pdp x7 is supposed to be mounted off the bass drum but I mount them off a stand for better tom placement. before I got the stand they were mounted off the bass drum and they didn't sound different at all.

sorry, not trying to thread-jack...but I'm not starting a new thread if there's basically already one about mounting.
I have a Sonor Performer so the hardware is a little dated to say the least. What would it take for me to update the mounting to something from Tama/Yamaha?
Not my picture as I'm at work right now, but it's the closest I have of something showing the front tom arms:
Actually, I'll just snag the only other current picture I have.....this is my kit:
Simple arm into the side of the drum. Well, after 15 years I'm finally getting sick of it. I no longer mount my toms off my bass drum as it shakes the piss out of everything and requires me to have them too high and not nearly flat enough.
This also means I don't need the tom mounting hardware on the bass drum. I'd like to remove it and resurface the area and re-wrap the drum, or at the very least, just use it as a port but remove the chrome hardware. Also, off to the right hand side you can see my 13" rack tom w/the mounting arm. I was using it as a floor tom and my clamp broke
So here's my question(s)
1) Is it even worth trying to adapt these to a more up-to-date mounting system
2) If so....
A) What are the two or three best options
B) What are the easiest options
C) What are the least expensive options
3) Would going to a rack be a better solution?
And finally, what's everyones opinion on possibly refinishing all the drums (as I mentioned above w/the bass drum) as to remove the current mounting hardware and fill the hole or use the existing hole as a port?
Thanks for any insight/tips or suggestions on the matter.

I don't know about you, but I'm concerned with how the mounting system works.
I don't like RIMS or ISS mounts. I do like Tama's Starcast, DW's STM, and Pearl's OptiMounts, though. Mapex's mounts are also pretty cool.

No hole drilled for tom mounts.

For me, the way that the tom mounting system looks can really make a set for me. I do dampen my toms so I'm not worried exactly about the affect it has on the drum sound. I just like me some fine looking tom mounts.
