My old Tama vs the New Tama
I bought a Tama Starclassic Performer Red to Black sparkle finish kit in 2006. It came with 10, 12, 14 toms and a matching 14 snare for about 1400. I've noticed that the same set nowdays comes with the same sizes but no mathcing snare and instead of the black mounts it has these cheesy looking chrome ones. Also the floating floor tom now has legs and sits on the floor. Both cost the same price even if it's missing the snare. Anyone else own the older set and think that new one is kinda lame? Or maybe you like it. Just wondering.

New Tama set snare not included):
I don't know. Maybe I'm just anal about the details but if I had seen this on the floor when I bought mine, I probably wouldv'e taken another set home with me that day.

Kinda diggin the new model man....I had a floating tom and it was just a hassle. Plus Im a big fan of brass snares, they're pretty beefy.

yeah, the floating tom is a little of a hastle but I still like it. The snare on the new sets nice but it doesn't come with the set. The set doesn't come with a snare at all which is my biggest problem with it.

Generally major manufacturers make changes to their lineup based on market and consumer research. Perhaps that research revealed that their potential customers preferred a floor tom. They may have also found that these players did not want the snare that was included with the older model because they preferred their own snare. Of course, no manufacturer of anything can please everyone all the time.

the new starcast mounts look worlds better than the old ones and i personally like floor toms more than mounted...ive always had floors and ive never had a problem with them. also, when i got my yamahas it didnt come with a snare but i already had one that i probably would have used anyway...why bother selling a snare with it if most people have their own already? the only thing i dont like is that the floor tom is only 12" deep....my old swingstar tom was a 16x16 and i had to put the back 2 legs up as far as they would go to get the drum to the right height, i dont know how id manage with 4 less inches to work with. the yamaha legs are longer so my 14x14 is now sitting where my 16x16 used to be...go yamaha!

I stopped buying Tama's for just that reason..... they change their lines too much.
I've had 4 different Tama kits and each time I bought one, 6 months later they discontinued it & you could never upgrade with anything that matches...
I do like the chrome mounts tho, looks great on the dark shells

I like the older kit myself and do agree with the statement about Tama constantly changing their lines too often. I don't own a single floor tom, I like the rack tom myself.
