Post My Snare
Well, I'm making a snare. I've just been too lazy to post it here. Here's the specs:
6.5x13'' (depthXdiameter) 10-Ply Keller Maple Shell
Purple High-gloss Lacquer with Green stripe going through middle
All black hardware (even including the snares Very Happy )

I still need to do like 7 more clear coats to be finished. I'll have pics up when I finish clears.

Very Happy

Purdy good. My tape sucked though so there's a tad of purple on it. Nobody would be able to tell from a distance Very Happy

Staining stripes sucks, no matter how good your tape is, there's always bleed through.

Yeah. I'm just not entirely done with the clear yet, so next week, it won't be pointless.

haha... im so used to be the kinda caring one who guides people through problems rather than being so blunt as to punch them in the face when they have an idea, so i find it hilarious when u keeping saying "its crap! i hate it! i hate it!" and everyones ignoring u like a little kid with a tantrum. Not saying ur like, thats just the image im getting in my head right now...

I'm just stating a fact. Stain soaks into the wood grain so it easily gets under the tape. There nothing you can do about it. If you want stripes, paint it because you have to seal the grain before you paint it.

Now im going to trust u on this, but if you were to cover the section u plan to stain then put some type of rubber or plastic, like that kind of glue they use when they stick free cd's to magazine covers you could seal it around the line and then peel off stain the line, then peel off the glue? im doubting the plausibility of it, but surely there must be some product that hasent been developed to help get the result he's after.

Wood is a porous material.........it sucks water. Thats what wood does when its in trees. So you cut it down, kill it, saw it, peel it, strip it, shape it, lay it up into plywood, then steam bend or hot press bend it into a cylinder for drumshells, and ............ youve still got a porous material that sucks water.

So you tape the surface of this porous material, to stop whats not on the surface from sucking water............and yer surprised? You would have the same results if you tried to stain a sponge by taping around it.

The only way to get stripes to work on wood is to seal the grain and paint it.

The stripes are fine. After it bled through, I just tore off the tape and went back and carefully painter over the bled through spots. A few discolorations in spots, but I say it looks pretty good for my first snare.
