 Neil's Paragon
Any users?
Musician's Friend is offering his entire live set up for $2,500.
Good deal considering if you were to buy each one individually you'd be spending over 5 grand.
But, I have heard & read reviews of those who have these & they don't rave about them.
Any thoughts?

I wouldn't spend that kind of jack without playing them first and seeing what you think about them. Peart plays them and if it's good enough for him then who are we to comment. We can only bow down.

I played, briefly, most of the Paragons. I'm not a huge fan of the crashes, but I prefer paper thin, dark, trashy crashes. I think that the shining stars in the line are the 13" hats and the 19" china. Both made me do a double take. When I played the hats, I had the coin on me to pick them up, but because I didn't really need them, I did not. I obsessed over those for about a week, checking Ebay and a bunch of other sites online just looking at them, trying to convince myself that I needed them. I've kinda made a resolution about buying pies this year and limit it to only the sickest deals with high potential profit margin and absolute necessities, but man, they are some killer hats.
The 19" china just had this beautiful trashiness about it. Not like a Wuhan, but similar with a bit more sustain. I believe Neil had Wuhans in his set up. Bottom line, I really dig this cymbal.
The ride is a great rock ride but heavy for my taste. The full $2,500 set is just too much, IMHO. Unless you are a collector or are playing in a Rush tribute, the set is just not practical.

That set actually would be practical for me, being that i use 2 chinas, 2 hats, 2 splashes, 3 crashes and a ride on both my setups. I'd have an extra crash, but I could sell it and make some of that chunky price tag. I'v thought about it, but I think i'm goin saluda for the trade in aspect. I'd rather spend $250 than $2,500

Therefore, it's not practical for you. Besides, you know that it's not just the fact that the set includes a certain quantity of specifically sized cymbals, but that you specifically use cymbals that sound different than the ones that come with this set. Price is also a consideration when it comes to practicality, too.

I own the base set (14 inch hats/16 crash/22 ride) plus the 10 splash and 19 china. The only other cymbal I use that I cannot part with is a 17 inch Zildjian K Dark Crash. I play in a band that plays a lot of Grateful Dead, Stones, and other classic rock and they have met high expectations. I agree that the 16 crash is probably the worst of the lot...probably compares to a Zildjian A Med Crash (not bad just ordinary). The ride is amazing and cuts through anything with a decent response for a 22 ride. Hats are really good sound nice open/closed and everywhere in between. China and splash are great with lots of good attack and vibrant sounds. I think they are good for most genres of rock music not so good for blues/jazz.
However, I think you can do a lot better than $2500 and do you need the whole thing? I would surf Ebay I got the factory sealed base set for a ridiculous price and have loved them ever since.
